I've wanted one of these for a lonngggg time..it is listen in the Zoell variety catalogs and on coins and Canada but I never thought i'd find one...but yesterday I got first pick at an old collection of minor varieties and stuff, likely from the 70s and this little beauty was in there.

edited to say: I love this coin, that die brake is YUUUGEE!

..sorry, I couldn't resist

so a question to those who can answer me..is this a well known and prized coin? I have looked for one for a long time but have never really heard or seen it mentioned anywhere before. I knew it existed, I just didn't know if it was well known and pursued by collectors.

Correct me if I am wrong but a Cud is formed from a broken die. Not a retained broken die. So if that piece falls off, then a Cud would form. Also note they may have changed out the die before the piece breaks off so there may not be a matching Cud to this retained broken die.

By the way...gorgeous coin buddy! Now find a matching one!

I've been looking for upwards of 4 years, and that consists of approximately ~4000 War Nickels from 44and45. Found some really nice die breaks, but never a retained broken die. I even have 3 dealers keeping an eye out for me, and they put any wartime nickel they get aside for me. Still no luck as of yet!

thanks everyone!

Robmck1967, I seem to get pretty lucky with coins but I don't think my luck is strong enough that i'd find another one I can dream though..

Apitrix, that is a long time! I either saw this listen on coins and Canada or in the Zoell book for the first time, but either way I think iv'e been looking around the same amount of time as you, maybe 3 years give or take...good luck in your search..i'll make you a deal and post some of my better finds in this series if you post some of yours

I'll post some that I got certified later on when I reveal what my coins were graded at. I got 2 nice 44s back, one partial chrome both have something different with them :) I'll have to look for my medicine bottle of varieties as well :P

Nice - that one is well known, Zoell FL175o
