A recent post got me thinking about the different type of
rolled coins. I thought some new collectors might not be
familiar with the different types. I thought I would try
to post some of the different types.

If I get any information wrong, please post a correction.

First

Customer wrapped rolls.

These are paper rolls, you could get the from the bank.
Customers would count and wrap the coins so they
could turn them into the banks.

Those look like pre-formed wrappers. Banks give out flat paper wrappers. Also, the shot gun rolls can also be rolled by customers,FYI.

Second

What I call Fed wrapped rolls.

These are rolls where a company like Wells Fargo would
get bulk coins from the Federal reserve, then wrap them for
delivery to banks

Commonly called N. F. String rolls
Different colors for different denominations

Mint wrapped rolls, sold by the mint store.

In my experience these coins are better quality
then Fed rolls. And with these you can be sure
all the coins will be the same.

Sometimes they are just in coin tubes ..
or and combination of all.

I hopes this might help some of the new collectors have a
better idea what is out there.

Thanks John

It has been a long time since I have rolled coins. I knew
most banks would give out flat paper rolls. I was never sure
where the source of the empty shotgun type roll came from.

But pretty sure I have gotten both.. filled with coins
from the banks.

Don't forget the shrink wrapped plastic type rolls.

When the State Quarters came out the rolls from the bank where I got mine were this style.

Yes .. forgot about them. I have seen them, but never had

Not sure where they originate.

Beware of shady sellers using these shotgun wrappers and a roll crimping machine ,filling rolls with inferior coins and passing them off as OBW rolls .

and how about the unsearched rolls? OK, that's a different topic.

Seriously, though, which of the types of rolls are considered "most productive" if one is to look through them for "keeper" coins? Does that differ by denomination?

Depends on what you mean by keepers.

For maybe finding pre 64 silver
Customer wrapped rolls, then Fed rolls.

For finding better grade modern coins, I would say mint
wrapped rolls. But the mint does not sell rolls of every
denomination.

I think this year they offer ATB Quarters, Native American dollar and last of the President dollars.

Machines and humans have very different criteria for what will or will no pass the good/not good check to go into a roll.

A machine will see no difference between a worn Indian Head cent, a worn Wheat cent, or a worn cent from the 70s. They may or may not be calibrated to reject silver, and will always reject magnetic coins.

Customer rolls may be picked clean, contain a good sampling of circulation coins, or may contain whole collections dumped by a clueless inheritor.

Exactly ,That's why I will always try to get customer wrapped rolls before any other kind . and I still say the whole month of December is the best time to get those CWR's.
Think about it. people will need money for Christmas presents ,their last resort; roll up those coins in that 5 gal. empty water bottle and off to the bank .
