I posted this in the metal detecting finds thread but I have another question that I want to get some opinions on. I found this 1897 barber and want to know if you think if that is a worn "O" mintmark or toning that just so happens to look like an "O"? Any opinions are welcome.

I enlarged the area and I do understand why you asked, but I don't see an O mint mark.

At first I thought it may have just been really worn, but after comparing it to other worn ones on ebay, I became skeptical.

It is a little hard to tell from the picture posted.

From that picture I would say.... not a "O" mint mark

@mail187man, I agree with the other posters that this isn't an O mint.

My reasoning is that if you look at the surrounding devices (knot, ribbon tails, and rim, they are all distinct and have some remaining height to them. It would be highly unusual for one small region to preferentially wear to such a large degree.

@Spence I thought so too. Still a silver piece, but not what I was hoping for. Thanks for the advice.

Rub your fingernail ober the area. Do you feel the resistence of a design element being there? Or does your fingernail just glide over the area without any bumps? That should give you a definite answer.
