Most are from a discovery made in 6 feet of water about 100 feet off the coast of Vero Beach, Florida. "You're dealing with something that's over 300 years old," Baudot said. "Everybody dreams about walking down the beach and finding treasure." Ships of the 1715 fleet were heading to Spain from Havana when they encountered the hurricane near what is now Vero Beach. Some 1,000 people died in the maritime disaster.

Perhaps gold coins hold up underwater better than silver or copper coins? I wonder what effect prolonged sea water immersion would have on a modern .9999 gold bullion coin?

Very nice ..
And I agree it would be nice to have one of these in my collection.
The article says 295 coins are being marketed ... I wonder how many total
could end up on the market.

Because 89 is on the flan while 16 is not.

Gold is quite inert. It doesn't like to react with surrounding materials. One of the reasons it is valued for money and jewelry.
