The 1851-O was the only Silver Three Cent Piece that was produced by the New Orleans or any branch mint. It is slightly scarce, but certainly not rare. This coin has long been one of my favorites, and I've had one in my collection since I was in high school.
The Type 1 Silver Three Cent Piece or "trime" was made from the odd alloy of 75% silver and 25% copper. The normal alloy was 90% silver and 10% copper. Because of that odd metallic mixture, these coins are prone to unattractive spotting, even on Mint State examples. The spots on this piece just cross the line into environmental damage in my opinion. It's still a decent interesting coin.
I would say that the wholesale value would be in the $25 to $30 range, and that the retail value would be $35 to $40.
