Any history or story for these? Who made them? And why?

He calls it a "fantasy crown". Was it minted by the RCM or a private minter?

These have been minted for years by private mints in England, with mintages from 20 or so to a few thousand, but most in the few hundreds. All look like semi-real coins, but always with the wrong monarchs, or coats of arms or whatever. They are basically tourist trinkets, with some dates 1936 or 37, but many 'dated" in the 1600-1800's. In my 2011 "Unusual Coins" book, they full retail at $25-$50 for the (essentially) nickel coins, but some come in real silver or gold and worth bullion value. Richard Lobel designed many of the fantasy pieces for England and Canada, but I have no idea who he is. I see red flags and 11' pole marks all over this offering and I wouldn't believe the "18" minted.

And I wouldn't touch this with Okie's 11' pole!

For this series of "unusual coins" I've seen a lot of variations on the $1 denomination offered for sale over the years. This is the first 50c I've seen. Similar to NCLT - if you like it, go for it, but it's not a government issue. And it's not an "investment" coin.

As I recall, Richard Lobel was (maybe still is) a London coin dealer. I used to hear his name a lot.

it's obviously not a RCM issue, regardless, how does this not qualify as a counterfeit?

nevermind,

the auction title says "50 cents" but now I realize there is actually no denomination on the "coin"

still a bit of a trademark/copyright ripoff though ?
