If you spend any amount of time on ebay, you know exactly what I mean--those huge spreads of coins on a table with seemingly no rhyme or reason, that contain everything from mint sets to piles of wheats to baseball cards and vials of gold flakes.

I have never personally taken the plunge, but maybe someone on here has? Do they ever have anything good?
Rest in Peace

All that is about estate sales is nothing but putting nice fresh bait into their listings . maybe 1 or 2 might be legit but in most cases it's nothing but a con game they put out for Newbie's .

It is the old trick of making the walls of the cave look like they are shining with gold.

Once you scoop into the dirt - that's all you get - dirt.

I might if I were into flipping coins, but have avoided them since I just care about filling holes.

I would love to hear some stories though.

I have stumbled across some great coins at in-person estate sales over a long life, but I would have no interest in anything advertised as such on ebay. Just too cynical, I guess.

About as reliable as unsearched rolls.

I just see it as just another twist on the general ebay coin market scamming. There's a reason why I don't buy coins over ebay: this contributes to the reason why.

Yeah, I always buy them but only when the lot is described as 'unsearched'! :D

There was actually a kid I believe on here about a year ago, spent 6k of daddies money on one of those lots and I think he eventually ended up returning it all because " he couldn't make a profit" if I remember correctly. Stay away, stay far away/

I'm fine buying graded coins off of ebay but I draw the line there. Pretty much anything else is ASKING for trouble. Estate sale, unsearched rolls, unopened GSA Morgan's - all for suckers with money to blow. Stay far far away!

Some of the one's I have seen, were bid up high by bidders that don't
Know what coins are worth.

Some that say make offer .
Don't take a good offer ....

Best thing is to not buy ..if you don't know what is there.

To be clear, I am not thinking about buying one; just curious as to what might actually come in one.

I have seen some ebay stores that do legitimately buy and liquidate estate sales... I have bid on a few, but always get beaten by the high rollers.

If I see the word "Estate" in the header I keep right on scrolling past the listing.

You are better off bidding on an Auctionzip site. There are a few auctioneers that do actually get coins at estate sales, and sell them, but their pics are usually poor, and the buyers premiums and shipping can run up the price.

I have never actually bought one that I can remember.

But I do sometimes stop and scan all the pictures for fun to see if there might be something they missed that is a gem.

It is no different than going through a bargain bin hoping for a cool find.

A virtual bargain bin!
