I have a dime that has the subject mark and I cannot find any information about it. Does anyone know if this a known recorded mint error coin? I will appreciate any information that you may have.
Thanks,
billeparker
Ps The original post had an incorrect subject date. (sorry)

to the forum!

Are you seeing the designer's initials?
Could be a die clash, but might just be a nick. We could guess all day and part of tomorrow but without a photo to look at, it's doubtful we will guess right.

Hello -- it looks like there might be a little die crack or chip there. I can't be certain because the photo isn't sharp enough. But if you're seeing a little raised line, that's probably a little die crack.

You can search this site for 'die crack' threads and look at a whole bunch of them. It will give you an idea if that's it or not.

Thanks for your reply. It was very helpful. As you suggested and I believe it is a die cavity or a chip that cause the mark to be raised on the coin. I have searched a lot of places and can not find this mark on any other coin. If this is one of a kind, where would I find the value of such a coin with a similar type of mark?

Die cracks occur during normal use and they are generally not considered error coins. It is just a die state, that is, the die is breaking up from use.

It is highly unlikely that it is one of a kind. It is more likely that many, many dimes (hundreds, even thousands) are just like yours.

I enjoy searching for die cracks and I keep the best ones but I don't think they have any real collector value. That being said, you will find them for sale on ebay --although usually only much larger die cracks. They do get interesting when the crack runs from rim to rim.

Search ebay for coins with die cracks on the bay and see what's available and more importantly, check the SOLD listings to see what sellers are really getting.

I don't think your coin is worth more than a dime -- except to you because it is (perhaps) your first find. So, if you like, keep it and make a note about the crack. If you keep searching, you'll find more.

Hope that helps.

I found a 1998 Philadelphia with the extra neck today. I am not sure if it's a die clash or struck through because it is accompanied by what looks like leaves coming out of his forehead and... I'm going to post some photos when I get off of work tonight hopefully I am able to get some good ones this time.

I have not got around to taking a photo and I also have realized that this post is pretty old however This dime is some sort of mistrike or strike through or something to that affect the "DIE CRACK" is perfectly symetrical in the pattern of either flames or leafs in the area between Liberty and Roosevelt's eyebrows nose and chin. Also there are extra letters beneath Liberty and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ON THE REVERSE there is a Y showing on the Reverse and a perfectly symmetrical Profile indention with additional design flaws through torches and mottos on reverse.
