It really amazes me how some people can pull such a mind boggling amount of copper cents, and there are still plenty to go around in circulation!

11,033 cents is a mere "drop in the bucket", so to speak, as they made tens of BILLIONS of them.

I wonder what the face value of 20 tons of pennies is!

Copper pennies = 3.1 grams ea.

1 pound = 453.6 grams
=> 1 pound of pennies 453.6/3.1 = 146.33 copper pennies per 1 pound.

20 tons = 40,000 pounds

40,000 pounds X 146.33 pennies per each pound = 5,852,903.24 cents or $58,529.0324

zinc pennies at 2.5g per cent = 181.2 cents per pound => $72,480.00

Priced kinda high, but free shipping for 20 tons has to count for something.

Nope, the change machine spits out dollar coins.

what do YOU use bills for anyway?
Really, not much at all. I try to spend them as soon as I get them. Same thing with my cents and other change. I do not suffer from heavy pockets or a fat wallet.

Of course, the skinny wallet has other contributing causes...

I've got all of my "junk 59-81" cents in a big 5 gallon waste basket... it's about 3/4 full... All of the S mints and the scarcer date (and harder to find out here) Philly coins (59-63, 69-71) have been pulled.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Only 77 lbs worth?

I am sitting on 800 lbs from roll hunting that are pretty much unsellable since the day copper took a $1 a pound hit overnight 2 years ago.

That is impressive, Jack!

My wife would kill me!

I was only briefly "serious" in CRH, and only did nickels regularly. I did maybe 5-10 boxes of cents total, and I was off-and-on about pulling them from circulation and my till at work. I did spend a few years pulling 100% of the copper I came across and putting it into the bucket, but I stopped that when I resolved to scrap the whole project.

Finn235 you have a good point. As a young lad, an experienced collector advised me that one valuable old coin in Mint State condition is better than many lower graded, lower priced coins. Or something to that effect. I did dump my State Quarter hoard at my local coin shop in exchange for some US Mint Silver Proof sets when the silver price dropped down to $14 an ounce. The price he charged for the sets was lower than the original issue price, so it was a good exchange. I will keep my copper for the time being, I coin roll hunt every month or two so I have a little under five gallons. It's good to know the approximate value. Thank you.
