So I have been mulling over it for a long time, and last night I finally pulled the trigger.

I fed over 8 years' worth of hoarded 1959-1982 cents into a coinstar.

Letting-Go-Is-The-Hardest-Thing-To-Doooooo....

The bucket I had them in wasn't feasible, so I moved them to gallon size baggies. The one in the Walmart bag ripped open when I picked it up.

The total:

Letting-Go-Is-The-Hardest-Thing-To-Doooooo....

11,033 cents x 3.2g each =

35.31 kg = 77.67 pounds.

And now I am $110 closer to a shiny new DSLR camera from Amazon!

These were dumped near Charlotte NC, so good luck to you local roll searchers!

The extras were the change that was in my pocket, just to be clear.
Rest in Peace

Good for you! If they were just sitting in a bucket, there's no point in hanging onto them.

Hope you can get your camera soon.
Rest in Peace

Very good decision , copper prices are still low and it's against the law to melt copper cents .

I had filled two 2-liter bottles shortly after the switch to zinc, but cashed them in because I was in college and needed the money. Sad to see them go but if they still haven't become valuable by now they probably never will (at least not in our lifetimes).

It took me a good long while to work up the guts to do it. I regret that I didn't sell them all in about 2011 when copper was about double what it is now... I might have been able to make a decent profit after shipping, ebay fees etc. But I didn't need the money then and just let the hoard grow.

Theoretically, I cashed $150 worth of copper for $110. That is markedly more than a metal recycler would give; there were no local buyers, and that $40 profit would vanish between the 13% ebay fee and the rising costs of shipping, even if the buyer paid a big chunk of it.

What I dumped was probably 60-75% of my whole cent collection; just the worn, scratched, brown ones while the bright and shiny ones sit in my collection proper.

Will they eventually face the same fate? I honestly don't know. At one point I planned to dump everything and use that money to buy every 1959-present mint and proof set, and just be done with it. I haven't done that yet; not sure if I ever will.

What I can say is that I plan to work through my quarter and half holdings; Probably $200 face of each. US moderns just don't really "do" it for me since branching into real collector coins. I guarantee that I will spend more time looking at my XF Caracalla denarius than a dusty bucket of copper pennies.

Also didn't have a picture of it, but I also dumped 94 SBA, Sac, and Prez $ coins... all of the ones with bag marks and discolored spots. Handling that many dollar coins reminded me of why people prefer the paper bills!

True, but there is no reason to have that many dollar coins (or half dollars or quarters) in regular commerce. We will continue to use any of the remaining larger paper notes (two dollar, five dollar, and so on).

Wow!

It really amazes me how some people can pull such a mind boggling amount of copper cents, and there are still plenty to go around in circulation!

I remember as a kid when it was collection day at my Grandfather's laundromats. I would sure hate to be someone who depends on vending machines etc. if dollar bills were ever eliminated. Ten thousand dollars of metal coin is a LOT more work to move/cash in/store than paper. A small cart would be needed to go in and out of the bank each week from the car.

What about all of those quarters?

I have not used a laundromat in a while, but I was glad when the car wash started accepting dollar coins. It is a lot easier to feed two dollar coins in than eight quarters.

Do not even get me started on trying to feed dollar bills into the machine with wet hands.

Back then the quarters were the heaviest part and most people did not want to carry the heavier hald dollars as their main change.

And back then it was .35 a wash - but no paper option. Otherwise, believe me, we would have appreciated a paper quarter!

Nowadays with vending machines accepting bills, it would be a lot more pain to collect many, many pounds of metal when the paper is so much lighter. And if larger bills were being used, then it would also require a lot more change be put into the machine to make change. it is difficult for people who have not moved large amounts of change weekly to understand what bother it really is.

That's what pants are for

Funny how times change. Sometimes wetting a dollar bill was the only way to make the old electric eyes in the changers accept them.

Possibly.

The real problem is I am trying to get an extra dollar in before the timer goes down. No time to put the wand down (let alone dry my hands). I can just set an extra coin or two on the edge, walk by, grab and drop, two more minutes! If I have to grab a dollar out of my pocket, that is even more time wasted.

I never want to insert more than the minimum to start because sometimes the wash goes easy, sometimes I come across some road kill I had not noticed.

I can see how that would help with the crinkled ones.

The fill your pockets with more heavy quarters and get rid of the convenience of the bills - what do YOU use bills for anyway?
