That is an amazing feat to accomplish indeed! Congrats on getting it done. My #1 set is complete with many late date ms fb coins but most of the early ones are vf or less. I may have merc fever worse than you though I'm working on set #17 but no 16 D's other than set #1.

jbuck - No doubt the collector is an expert in his field, but the market value of (say) a raw 1919-S 65FSB would certainly be substantially less that one slabbed by a major TPG. I am simply asking whether cracking is good long-term strategy for coins as rare as these. If he is cracking a coin like this, then he must have done it many times before.
This makes no sense to me, and I am simply asking why he is doing it.

If the collection is now 65FSB based on cracked and raw coins and (essentially) his opinions, then this collection is not as wonderful it might seem, or might have been.

Your opinion appreciated as always!

All the coins Carl is cracking were raw prior to 1980ish so if that's the way he prefers to collect them so be it. TPG slabs are not for everyone.

If I remember correctly Carl has made it clear in the past that he fills albums......slabs do not fit in Whitmans....

I would not have the cajonas to crack some of them but.....I like it!
Rest in Peace

Ah, ladies and gentlemen we are not here to criticize the way Carl collects his coins . the man's feat was extraordinary for the simple fact that he started set #1 with the unknown feeling of what if I fail, '' What If I Can't Find Every Merc. In FSB '' . My friend he has not only completed set #1 but is now working on #12 .
so lets all stop worrying about how he found them ( slabbed or not ) and give him 3 Thumbs Up for his Mind Blowing accomplishment.

I have been waiting for this for some time. My sincerest congratulations for your accomplishment!

The last one was the 1926 S, right?

With the number of coin shows available to him, I am rather confident he has been able to assemble his sets with raw coins. If not, then I am the last one to judge him for cracking slabs to fill holes.

Hey, I was just asking a couple of logical questions, with no criticism stated or implied. Of course it's a wonderful accomplishment. I simply wanted more of the backstory.

But a question - I take it all of them were at one point slabbed, which is how you know they are FSB, is that right?

And if so, by cracking them, are you not subjecting yourself to the risks and costs of re-grading when it comes time to sell? I mean, no one will give you 65FSB money for raw examples of the many monster dates in this series.

Only a few of all my coins were in slabs. And that is only due to just couldn't find one not in a slab. So many people today are slab happy but I have no slabbed coins. Any in the past that I purchased, were almost immediately taken out. And since I never sell a coin, makes no difference to me whether anyone believes they are what I say they are. Going to from 2 to 4 coin shows a Month has made collecting a bit easier than other methods. Almost all my coins are in Albums. Many are in 2x2's waiting for enough to accumulate to start a new Album. My favorite has always been the Mercury dime which is why I have 12 completed sets now and many rolls or ones in 2x2's waiting to go into a new Album. Not completely true though. Only 10 sets have the 16D. I have saved most of the little tabs from slabs though. Don't know why. That 26S with FSB sure was a long time coming.

I agree with you. A coin that is graded MS65 TPB slab is going to most likely sell for a higher price than a raw coin. This is not true for all coins or grades in my limited experience. but there would be less arguing about the grade of the coin. I bought many MS64 Morgan dollars in slabs and they sold for a little more than the raw ones. I broke the common ones out and put them in my album. The ones over $200 stay in the slab.
