Hey everyone, I have an ancient knife/coin and a hollow-handled spade/coin and am hoping to get these authenticated. Services I have contacted will not touch cast coins of this age. Any help. ideas, feedback is gratefully received. In New Zealand we are isolated from the centres in Asia where ant experts would probably live. Thanks Murray

Send a PM to Typecoin,

He is an expert or what I would call well read on these. He has recently become busy with his co-op but will hopefully see this and have an aswer! :)

Ai. Hate to break it to you, but it seems you have fallen for the trickery of ebay seller Best666666. Am I correct in assuming you bought these there? I recognise the picture, and the o-so treacherous patina. This seller has been selling counterfeits unchecked for quite some time now, nothing seems to stop him from deliberately deceiving people. Nearly all coins offered by him, with the exception of some later, bad condition and low value world coins, are fake. Every Chinese coin he sells is basically fake. Every antique he offers is fake. Just avoid him. And quite decent fakes to be fair. Sometimes he even breaks the counterfeits / intentionally damages them, to make them look authentic. This Wang Mang knife (sometimes also referred to as a "key") would have been worth quite a bit of money if genuine. Thomas (TypeCoin971793) has quite a nice blade, broken off from such a coin, still worth quite a buck. We don't have a picture of the Hollow Handled spade, but assuming it too comes from Best666666, it is fake as well. Would try to see if you can get your money back! Although I am not sure this seller will.

Mika

I've bought a few "knives" over the years from FR in NY, and none of them had this "bright green" patina. That, plus the swabbed up brass points to a pretty poor fake.

Typecoin would offer a better opinion if he sees this.

Yes, as Mika has pointed out, this coin is a fake sold by the ebay seller Best66666. The glossy patina is always a bad sign. Also, the obverse rims on the handle do not look right; the outer rim is too thin and rounded, and the inner rim lacks definition on the outer edge. You can see what I mean by comparing your coin to these genuine specimens:

That doesn't start until January. In fact, I should be less busy then than I am now.

Unless it is an electric blue/tan combination, the color does not really matter (unless you are trying to spot super counterfeits by matching find spots to minerals in those areas). It is the texture of the patina that matters, and in this case, the glossy texture is a huge red flag.

The "swabbed up brass points" are actually incuse areas that have been filled with gold. That is how it is supposed to be in originality, though the gold has since been replaced on most genuine specimens.

I think the "swabbed up brass" refers to a section of rim in the upper right, not to the inlaid gold characters.

That said, with this particular type being rather famous and rare, it should be expected that any examples of it are almost certainly fake (unless either specifically authentificated, or bought from a trusted dealer).

I agree with AnYangMan, eBay seller Best666666 is very dangerous. To newer collectors, at first glance, it seems Best666666 has some very interesting inventory. But almost all, if not all, of his "interesting" coins are fakes. Some of his fakes are obvious, but some of his fakes are good enough to fool even those collectors with some experience.

Collectors need to be warned about this guy.

Please stay away from this ebay career fake seller - Best666666

Or you will just be throwing your money away.
