My hunch is no, but just wanted to be sure.
Thanks...Mont.

As with almost any series it's all about the grade. Some Ikes in grades of 66-68 are worth huge bucks. But if you look at the TPG census you will see that the reason those are huge bucks is because it's so rare to find one in those grades. An expert on Ike grading might find a few. To answer your question specifically go to Heritage or Great Collections for actual sales, PCGS & NGC prices (high) and census, ebay sold. Easy for you to get answers if you do the work.

There are Eisenhower dollars worth grading, but I agree that the ones actually worth being graded are a small population. I do not think a single one of my Dansco Ikes would be worth grading. I also think the only reason why we have so many (lower grade) slabbed Ikes is that people gambled and lost. I am building a graded set now and am buying them already encapsulated. I do not want to take the chance of being wrong with my submissions.

Just like any other coins ....on e the value gets high enough, it can make it worth grading. High grade 1971 and 1972 (P and D) would be ones I would look for.

65 and up on the 71-72 P&D. 68 & up on the silver business strikes (except 71S, that would be a 67+). 66 & up on the rest of the clad business strikes. If you are off by one grade the coin won't be worth the grading fees on many of these. Just like jbuck, this is why I built my set already slabbed.

At coin shows I've seen many coins that I think are worth less than a dollar in a slab. Some people are what I call slab happy.

A good number are submitted in bulk (probably getting a discount on the fees) and they hope for just a few winners. The losers are dumped on the cheap. Those are the ones I can afford.

Thanks for all the replies. I kinda figured this would be the answer. I have bought a graded one for less than the cost of grading fees and have seen plenty of others as well. For now I will keep getting nice raw coins. Maybe pick up a slabbed set later on down the road.

The 1972P Type 2 Reverse.
This coin always commands a premium, but especially in Mint State.

Quote: For now I will keep getting nice raw coins. Maybe pick up a slabbed set later on down the road. Not a bad idea. I built my Dansco set first (over twenty years ago) and just recently started building a slabbed set (I have three slabbed Ikes so far). Quote: I had this one graded: Very nice!

Ikes never circulated. As a result of that, they all should turn up in a narrow condition range.
I do not think than ANY coin is value justified in being slabbed, unless you intend to sell it for a profit that at least covers the slabbing and shipping fees.

Hi agree with Jbuck and MontCollector ... it can be more cost effective to pick up common Ike's already slabbed. Most times they can be bought for less than the cost of sending them in yourself. --------------------- Not sure about the population of 1972 type 2 Ike's, but I have searched thousands of Ike dollars and have not found one.

Quote: Ikes never circulated. Oh really? Someone forgot to tell that to many of the Ikes in my Dansco. They did circulate, especially in the casinos. Never say never.
