I wouldn't clean them at all.

If you want them to retain value, don't clean them at all.

Cleaning is almost always a bad idea.

Give us more details . Why do you have more than 300 with dirt on them ? Are they ground finds ? Is the dirt imbedded in the coins ,or just on the surface ?

Well not sure these were in a big crock collected over the 60,70,80 by someone that worked at a bank he died. His wife was going to dump them into a coin counter my daughter new her she asked me if I wanted them I told her I would pay her face value she got them for me.
Yes I counted them all a few years ago and then placed them in cent wrappers forgot about them.
Not sure why so many seem to have something that may have been spilled on them is my guess.

Brucec , If you don't mind using a lot of Acetone ,then I'm thinking that might be your best solution to your 300 Lincolns , If they are real nice don't forget to use a second or even third batch of fresh Acetone for final rinse . just MHO !

Well.....unless I'm wrong, they aren't worth very much anyway, and it might be fun to experiment with a few of them. Certainly not recommended to clean coins, but a few pennies can't hurt. I was thinking one of those ultrasonic jewelry cleaners might work well, but you probably don't have one. I probably wouldn't waste much acetone on pennies. Warm water and a little Dawn sounds like a good start, like you said..

There is nothing like experience to drive a lesson home. Learn on the cheap coins. After a few "Oh my! What have I done!" moments, you'll better understand why other methods border on The Black Arts.

Don't clean coins.
That being said they are you're coins you can do what you want to them.
If they are Lincoln cents I wouldn't waste my time.
If you are going to clean them use acetone.

I just wanted to save them like all my collections for my kids and they can pass them onto the grand kids. I will have to get a few and put them into warm water and dawn dish soap say over night and see what happens.
Just thought in 40 more years they may be worth something for the grand kids me I am to old to worry about it I just love coins something about them for one they are real money.
I will take a few before and after the dawn pictures of 5 or so cents.
