PMD for sure. This penny has met a hammer or two in its lifetime. The smoothness you're talking about is just when the penny got back into circulation for a few more years. This is how I see it panning out: the penny is brand new, and goes into circulation. A couple years later, when it isn't BU anymore, kids think it would be fun to destroy it. They hit it with a hammer, and put it into circulation again. Then 50+ years after that, you find/buy it. Probably not worth anything, but it sure is a cool keepsake!
