I've just purchased some used Dansco albums to hold some recently acquired sets.

Is there anything in particular that I should look for to make sure that my coins will be safe once I put them in?

They're in green folders now, so I know that the Danscos will better protect them along with making every coin viewable from both sides, but I can't shake the feeling that something bad will happen because the albums are used.

I would not worry about it too much. They should be fine.

However, take a good look at the slides. If they are cloudy, dirty, grimy, etc, then I would replace them. I am not sure who has replacement slides, but I got some directly from Dansco a while back. My suggestion, though, is to get some acetate sheets and cut them into the appropriate sizes.

It wouldn't hurt to blow them with the canned air most commonly used to clean camera lenses and parts. That would get rid of almost all the dust, too.

Good idea.

I do that with new ones, did not think to mention it might apply to a used one as well.

Can air is a good suggestion ..

I also keep a small shop vac handy ... before putting coins into albums
I try to vacuum out any dust.

Funny thing is that I use a vacuum when blasting anything with canned air, to catch the blow off. (This is especially helpful when cleaning out old computers.)
