I'm in the process of transferring some sets from old green Whitman folders to albums, and I've hit a bit of a snag.

With these folders, the first two pages of coins are in slots that are meant to be removed with a fingernail. The backing is hard board, so you can't press up with a finger like in the blue folders.

I'm especially concerned about the dimes. How do I get these out without damaging them?

Do you have a Swiss army pocket knife? You could use those small plastic toothpicks that come with them and try to carefully pry the dimes up. I don't think they could be damaged or scratched if your careful.

@silver searcher, you didn't mention whether you were trying to preserve the old Whitmans. If not, then you could simply fold the cardboard at the level of each row (or column) of coins and they would half stick out of the slots. I would definitely go slow with this process and perform it over a soft surface like a carpet as they may fall out completely.

I'd whittle a popsicle stick or chopstick into a thin "scewdriver" tip and pop them up with it.

You would wait to grow out a fingernail or two.

Or use something blunt and soft, made from wood or plastic.

Patience should be priority one.

You can usually put some pressure on the back of the album to get the coin out.
The only problem with this is there is a tendency to damage the album.
Much of my collections used to be housed in dansco push in albums and I have put them all into archival safe pages and albums now.
I gave away the dansco's a while back and most of them were still in good condition after I had removed the coins in this fashion.

On these green folders two of the pages have hard backs.
Which means you can't press the coin up from the back.

As others posted finding something something sturdy that won't
scratch the coin, and gently pop them out. Work the rim, trying
not to touch the faces of the coins.
Rest in Peace

Silver Searcher; This really doesn't look like a major project to me .
A butter knife with a little tape on the end should do the job without scratching the coins . Keep an eye on the tape to make sure it doesn't wear down .
