I'm a cashier and I come across dozens of wheat pennies :: points to a jar with plenty of them :: many of times they just go over looked. But my friend pointed out that SOMETIMES they can be worth something. I, on the other hand, em skeptical. What should I look for in a Wheat penny before I toss it back into the currency loop. (if I kept everyone I'd be over taken by the end of the year)

I go through thousands of wheat cents every month, most of the time you will see 1940 to 1948 pennys. In these dates most are only worth a few cents each, if the 1943 D,S or Plain are in very nice shape I set them aside. Same thing with the 1954 S and 1955 S if they are in near AU shape.

I also set aside all pre 1940 cents looking for the Key and Semi-Key coins. The Keys are (prices are base on Good to MS-65red shape)

1909 S VDB (850.00 to 8,500.00)
1909 S (125.00 to 1,600.00)
1914 D (250.00 to 25,000.00)
1922 P ( no mint mark) (850.00 to 175,000.00)
1931 S (135.00 to 1,800.00)

Semi-Key
1909 VDB (15.00 to 1,000.00)
1910 S (20.00 to 2,000.00)
1911 S (40.00 to 4,000.00)
1912 S (27.00 to 6,000.00)
1913 S (16.00 to 70,000.00)
1914 S (30.00 to 25,000.00)
1915 S (22.00 to 5,500.00)
1922 D (20.00 to 7,500.00)
1924 D (45.00 to 20,000.00)
1926 S (11.00 to 100,000.00)

Error to look for
1955 doubled die (1,100.00 to 40,000.00)

Any other pre 1940 Wheat cent can be worth 25 cents to a few dollars on avg. Hope this helps and also that it will show that there are some Wheat cent dates worth a lot of cash.

Most dealers will pay 2 to 3 cents each for any common Wheat cent. If you get alot of them through out the year its would be worth your time to cash them in at a coin shop. 10.00 worth of wheat pennys = 30.00 cash.

It's really worth your time to keep them all--there aren't that many ways to triple your money so easily in this world.

If you see as many per year as you say and you just return them to change, then you are practically throwing away money. Even if you do not have a coin dealer in your area to purchase them, they sell by the roll or the pound on ebay as well.

As already note you may be throwing a lot of money away. Many people just don't want to get involved with ebay or other internet web sites so if that is your case, just look up a coin dealer or coin shop in your area and sell them to them bulk rate. For sure you'll get more than $0.01 each with is what your getting by just dumping back into circulation.
Or you may want to purchase a book called The Red Book. It will give you a complete list of which ones are what. The naturally you could check out the https://www.coppercoins.com web site for more details of each year.

Welcome to the forum RoRo! Thanks for the useful list of keys and semi keys Dave (and welcome to you too!). Just a quick note on the 1922 "P" above. These coins were struck in Denver, not Philadelphia. They're key because the D didn't show due to worn/overpolished dies.

so I'm also new to this forum. Hi guys.
I was just in the middle of a 'deal' so to speak but don't know if its a good one. Here is my situation.
I found a seller who is offering me his 270+ wheats (i havent looked through them b/c its from another state) for 9 dollars. The 9 will come out of halves from the mid-80's to 2001. Would you say that this would be a good deal for me or not? Thanks.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM.
At approxiately a little over .03 each not a big deal. Not sure what you mean though. Are you planning on a trade for the cents with your half dollars? 18 halfs pending on the grade of those years is just about 9 dollars. Sort of like using currency. His 270 Wheat Cents HAVEbeen searched, looked through, checked many, many times you know. Today probably 99% of anyone that says these are unsearched anything is just kind of not telling the truth.
