Hey yall, I am new to the collecting scene and I have been sucked in by the Dollar Coin Bug. I now have gained a huge fascination with all of the dollar coins (Morgan, Peace, Ike, and the older out of price range Flowing Hair.) To you seasoned veterans that I have read posts from on the site what advice can you give a budding collector like myself to get started and to really figure out this lifetime help. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am also interested in notes, but specifically the two dollar bills.

Welcome to the Forum! Every single person here has a unique perspective of what to collect. Personally I have a 7070 Album (US type set of one of every type of coin) I collect world coins in any form and fashion but I try to acquire One From Every Country (OFEC) My main collection is WWII Commemoratives from anywhere in the world with a current emphasis on The Marshall Islands. And I keep any world notes that cross my path just to have a collection. And any US notes that seem interesting or might be valuable some day. ----------------------------------------------------------- To answer your question now... If you are wanting ideas for collections try a set of just cents, or nickels, or dimes etc. Getting halves from the bank and trying to make a full set of those can be fun sometimes too a Lot of members have the Dansco 7070 that I already mentioned. welcome and enjoy

WELCOMEMy advice is to not get started in something that is as additive as a narcotic. Yes, you too will soon enough have thousands of posts here, spend all as much money as possible on coins and coin stuff, buy and read books on coins, talk to people about coins. THINK. You will now be spending many, many hours a day concerned about a small, tiny, round piece of metal. Does that sound sane? And next Sunday is Easter and that means no coin shows around here. Oh, I forgot. All new members should buy coffee for the rest of us. Also, you get to use those silly, childish, goofy looking faces to the left of this screen when answering someone. Again, WELCOME.

I checked out the Dansco album. That seems like something that would be great to try and complete. I am already bitten by the bug. I have spent the last two weeks researching like a mad man. It is amazing to me how these different coins can help tell the history of our country.

Welcome to the forum! I will suggest that since you have been bitten by the dollar bug, go ahead and work on the Ike dollar collection (if you have not started already). It is only 32 coins, including Proofs and other NIFC (34 if you want to collect the three 1972 varieties). Easy and not expensive to complete. It was the first set I completed. There is a lot of satisfaction in completing a set; for me it fuels the desire for the next one! I am working on a 7070 as well. Always a good choice. Jefferson nickels are another good series to collect. Probably the easiest to collect just by searching rolls; Kennedy half dollars being in a close race. Of course, filling these sets from just roll-searching would not typically include the Proofs or other NIFC, but many have found such in their searches!

Welcome Ty. My primary focus is collecting the dollars as well, although the State Quarters were the reason I got into collecting 10 years ago. I think jbuck gave you some good advice starting with the IKE. I started with the Susan B. Anthony ( SBA) and it worked out well. Its nice to get started with the smaller sets because it allows you to satisfy your craving for coins, while not blowing a ton of money. All the while, you will become more familiar with the hobby and how things work. I was very pleased when I completed my SBA collection. It was my first one and I felt I accomplished something. You picked a good forum to get started in. It has been my expience that there are a lot of nice and knowledgable people here. Good luck and enjoy! Another word of advice. Unfortunately there are alot of people in the coin collecting world who will take advantage of a new collecter or someone who is excited to get their coin, so if you have any questions or concerns about a coin your considering, I urge you to post your questions here to get some good feedback and advice! Enjoy! Dorion

Thank you all for your help. I think I will start with the IKE's set. What is the going rate typically for these coins or is there a way that I can acquire these coins through rolls at my bank. Once again I appreciate all the great responses.

Getting them through rolls might be more difficult since the Ike was replaced by the baby dollar 30 years ago, but many here seem to have had success with them.
I think your best option is a coin show, they seem to be plentiful there. The Ike is overlooked by many, so you might have luck finding decent ones in the junk bins!
I do not have current prices handy, but someone with a recent greysheet should be able to give you a ballpark price.

Welcome to the forum, I too restarted my coin collection with the intro of the Pres Dollar. I have started both a Susan B Anthony dollars set and and IKE set. Both are near completion and are reletivly easy to complete, except two of the SBA proofs are over $100. You will learn lots on here and the replies are super fast.

And of course, it depends on the condition you're looking for. If you're happy with XF, you can do an Ike, SBA and Sac collection for not too much money (if you ignore the expensive varieties). As far as older dollars (Peace, Morgan, etc.), I collect the ones that are AG/Good/Very Good condition. Most of these can be had for about Melt value. Basically, I don't have the money to be buying MS-65 Morgans, so I settle for circulated examples. It's also very easy to sell these when you upgrade or if you decide you don't like the series.

Yeah with the more modern dollars I don't mind the condition (of course I don't want them in too bad of shape.) I think that I agree with you on the Morgan and Peace with the AG/Good/VeryGood Condition, but limited funds write now so I am going to stick with the Moderns (I can already tell one can get carried away in this haha.) I did get my 2008 Silver American Eagle from the mint today and I was thoroughly excited.
