ebay coin sellers basically sign (electronically) a statement that the coin they are selling is genuine. If the coin is not genuine then it doesn't matter whether you removed the coin from its bezel or sealed holder or whatever. If the seller refuses you a refund, you are going to need expert confirmation that the coin is fake and to contact both ebay and PayPal if you paid that way. Keep careful and meticulous records.

quote: For what it's worth, I don't see slab counterfeiting as a big problem at this point. There is some risk in buying from private parties on ebay, but if you make your larger purchases from major auction houses (Heritage, Teletrade, Superior, Goldbergs, etc.) and/or reputable dealers, your risk is very small.
A couple months back we found a Peace dollar on Heritage being sold in one of the old counterfeit rattler slabs. Heritage never realized it until it was brought to their attention after the sale ended and they had already shipped it to the buyer. quote: The serial numbers on PCGS, ANACS, and NGC slabs can be verified to confirm that the number matches the coin in the holder.
And that is worthless. So far all of the fake NGC holders seen have contained labels that copied the information from a genuine label and the coin in the holder is the same type and date but not always the right grade. Also so far most if not all of the coins in the holders have also been counterfeit.

Oh, I am so outraged. I went to a dealer, and he confirmed the coin was counterfeit. I tried to get a refund, and he wouldn't since I removed the coin from the bezel. I left negative feedback, and the seller retaliated in neg feedback stating that I had tried to "switch coins" in my attempt to get a refund, and that I deal with counterfeits! UNBELIEVABLE! Well, this story will tell the tale. The pics of the coin that were originally posted were directly from the listing. Although, many have commented on those being fake, the real proof came in the close up shots that I took. The first ones displayed earlier by 'halfabustisbetter' were the same ones from this listing. I'll let you guys be the judge. Do the coins match up? It's the same coin! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...3080580&ssPa geName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=020 sorry for the vent...but this has really got me steamed.

Please say you paid by credit card or bank debit card. If you did, call your card issuer IMMEDIATELY and dispute the payment.

I agree with biokemist. Even though you removed it from the bezel, it was still a counterfeit, so that shouldn't matter since it wasn't the authentic item it was suppose to. That would be like buying a real Picasso and once you take the frame off you notice that your Picasso was painted over a Britney Spears painting. You had to take the bezel off to help identify if it was authentic or not, everyone knows that. Plus ebay has a policy not to sell counterfeit items.

That's fine. Call up your credit card company ASAP and have them stop the payment.

thanks for the replys. I filed a dispute with paypal, but it is only between me and the seller. I doubt he will concede; so should I upgrade it to a claim? I plan to call UBOC today.
thanks, John

was this within his 7 day return policy or has that long been over? I know it doesn't really matter because the coin is fake but I am just wondering

You should have him by the nads. Documentation is key as it will take several weeks to resolve.

thanks, this is encouraging. One thing I'm concerned about though is how do I "prove" that the coin is counterfeit? I mean, we all know this based on the pictures and the listings, and I've had dealers confirm this and I've reported it on ebay....but will this be enough to prove it and get a refund? I'm trying to look at it from his standpoint, as he would argue that the coin I have in hand is different because it doesn't have the bezel on it(though he KNOWS it's the same coin). I've also posted the pics and listings on cointalk, and everyone has come to the same conclusion that it's fake...so I have tons of opinions to base this off of. Should I use these threads as a refernce point in my dispute?

And how do you "prove" the coin you want to send back is the same as the one you took out of the holder and/or out of the bezel?

Hey. I have a favor to ask of you guys. The pictures that I posted are of the same coin in the actual listing. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...WN:IT&ih=020I would like for you to compare the picture and display your honest opinion of whether or not you believe they are the SAME coin. I know they are for a fact, but paypal is investigating this case and I had given them links to several threads(this one included)Any additional inputs that could be offered would be appreciated. The signs of counterfeit come out more strongly in the pictures I took, but I still believe that most of them are visible in the pictures from the actual listing. Here is a picture taken DIRECTLY from the listing(please view to compare), in which the raised tooling marks are visible....and more confirmed in the pictures that were presented earlier on in this thread.
