Date in quotes for a reason. My grade on this "1896" is G details, and I am going to try to acetone off the tape residue, even though it will still be tape-toned. Now, the story...please share your thoughts on a grade, if you'd like!

Seller's listing picture (was 1600x, I zoomed it) for their "1896 Barber dime"

Yeah, not gonna get a lot of clicks on such a common date with that...but, he did have some other photos posted, so why not check out that disturbance at the bottom of the field? Second picture seller lists is the obverse (zoomed and cropped by me):

Old girl has tape residue. Another strike against her. Most bidders who clicked the auction hit the back button.

But, wait, there's a third picture of the reverse: let's download it and zoom in on it...is that? Could it be my hunch was right?

YES! It's an "S!" She's a San Francisco lady.

A minor victory, and not exactly a high-grade coin, but it fills a semi-key-date hole in the Dansco!

You gotta love it when you actually score with a little knowledge. I do hope the tape scrum disappears. Ever try Glue Gone?

Not yet. I do have a bottle, though. Never thought about using it on a coin.

Nice Pick!! I wouldn't use glue-gone on a coin, solely because of the risk of damaging it, but you could try it.

"IF" you use anything use pure acetone. It still might leave an uneven toning though.

Nice score Adam. I agree with an acetone dip to remove the tape residue.

Nice pickup Adam. You probably got one heck of a deal on it. I agree use pure acetone. It did wonders with a 1916 S walker I had, it had a big tape residue that was almost completely removed.

I don't think Glue Gone would hurt a coin like this.

If there was a grade of G-7, that's where I'd be at. That tape will come off as will the scum around the mint mark. Be gentile! Hopefully there will be a few letters of "LIBERTY" once received.

Good score on an 1896-S.
