newbie here, but I'm looking to learn, I visited the "appraising a coin" section of the site, I have thoughts on where this should be graded but I'm looking for some more trained eyes to help me, also I have concerns about the (excuse my terminology) shading/dis-color on the front, any help is greatly appreciated.(sorry for crappy pics, I actually just ordered my new usb microscope today)

@john, yes I was aware it is a D coin, Thank you, and @ coinfrog, what do you mean if those colors are accurate its a detail coin ? I'm very curious to what this means?

Neither coin exhibits (in these pics) a "natural" color - the obverse appears a golden brown, while the reverse appears a splotchy light gray/dark gray/silver. If the pics are accurate, then they seem to suggest some sort of chemical or environmental exposure (details).

does that lower the grade therefor lowering the value?

I agree with VF details.
In this case the splotchy coloration, most noticeable on the reverse, is a classic case of a poor attempt at dipping in an acid or some other environmental damage.
Since the obverse does not display that same splotchy look, it is more likely to be ED rather than dipping.
Details means something is "wrong" with the coin. Bad scratches, bad rim dings, cleaning, manual repairs, and many other defects cause the coin to be given a details grade, rather than a righteous solid grade.

Quote: detail coin ? Without a problem your coin would get a numerical grade, such as VF-25. With a problem, it might get a "details" designation, such as "VF details - Environmental Damage". This is how PCGS and NGC handle some problems, rather than giving an outright grade.

A "details" designation means that the wear level is consistent for the given grade (in this case VF), but the coin has a problem that makes it worth less than a normal coin of the same details. Calling them the same condition would be erroneous, so the graders differentiate the two by calling the problem coin "details."

1917-D T-2. I'd say VF-35 details. Color looks not original/ attrictive.
