I was showing my neighbor this coin I had from when I was a kid. He said to check it out because of the wear pattern (or lack of) he thinks the 5 was messed up in the making?
Any opinions?

Interesting coin...here's my take on it. First...minting was more hit and miss in the 1800's, so weak strikes were pretty common. That could account for the five appearing more worn than the other numerals. Also, dies deteriorate through use, and sometimes cavities become filled with grease and debris; again resulting in weakly struck elements of the coin.

Finally, this coin has "lived life" so to speak, so it has been in many pockets and received significant wear. Post mint damage (meaning any of a lot of things) could have affected the appearance of the five.

In any of the above cases, the value of the coin is usually not increased, and in the third case, it would be diminished.

Others will surely have more thoughts on the subject...and they may not agree with my assessment. I love the bust coinage of all denominations. Thanks for sharing.

I had checked online last night for something about errors on my coin's date, and found nothing. Thank you for confirming.

Looks more like a strike through grease. The area around the last number star and even part of the lower bust is affected. Wear would show more on the rim of your coin than what I can see.
