We went through my father's effects and divided up his small coin collection. There was much speculation what great value we surveyed, but alas there was nothing out of the ordinary or of much value amidst the shiny objects. The valuable thing is I stumbled into the strange and wonderful world of coin shops through out the US, in my town of 100,000 people there are 3. I soon learned that the most valuable part of my father's loot was pre-65 coins with a total FV of $1.70. All three shops were offering 8x FV so I introduced myself to the friendly couple that runs the closest one and walked away with $13.60 in US currency. Actually, I lie, what I did was purchase some sort of a 6Kg balance scale that was on the shelves as I desire mechanical scales over battery operated ones.

A simple little tale, but I have a vivid imagination and am stuffed with information from my love of historical novels. The 4 book series of a heroic English mercenary who survived the 100 years wars in France filled me with visions of traveling around with gold and silver, perhaps only pre-65 junk silver and in a Walter Mitty grand style visiting coin shops around the US and making small exchanges to support the day's business.

I use a digital scale but have always been fascinated with mechanical scales and their weights. There's just something about mechanical/manual precision that gets to me.
