I have been attempting to identify medieval coins, and it is a struggle sometimes to determine what the letter of the legend is. For example, a "c" looked like an "o" to me.

Does someone have a good on-line reference which illustrates what the different letters look like?

I find that the catalogues I have are quite weak in this area-they seem to take this bit of knowledge for granted.

@oriole, yes I have struggled with this topic for many years. I think that a healthy knowledge of Latin helps, because in many cases, you can better anticipate the letters if you know a few. Other than the my two threads here:

I'm not aware of any other information on this subject. It would be awesome if someone else here in CCF did...

@aiglet, nice link! Knowing what the rest of a word might be based on a few of the letters is definitely helpful, but I think that @oriole is looking for images of the individual letters and what various shapes (and orientations) they can take.

I have always had difficulty with Lombardic script on medieval coins.

Lombardic script on documents however, is usually easier to read.

'lombardic script'
is a good place to get a start.

@aiglet, @Spence is correct, it is the images of the individual letters I am after. Your link, however, does have useful information.

I will do more internet searching, and if all else fails I may be forced to do the work myself. At any rate, I am quite sure that I can grab images from the multitude available.

I will share this with the group whenever I get more.
