what grade would you give this one? don't have one of these and thought this looked decent. XF 45 or so? Price seem reasonable? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1867-SHIELD...AOSwo4pYC8No

I think the hairlines and lack of dirt point to a rather harsh cleaning. Also, I think that there may be corrosion on the reverse by the star at 12-o'clock

EF-40

I agree with Pinenut that the surfaces look off, but I don't see any immediate evidence of a cleaning. Proceed with caution, though.

I would have said XF 45 also, but I'm still learning.

Typecoin is a MUCH better reference
Rest in Peace

The obverse is a strong 45. The reverse star segment separations look more like a 35, almost certainly due to a weak strike that always seems normal for this date. It's a EF-40 in my opinion, although it might look like more of a 45 in hand.

There is no evidence of cleaning or the shadows formed from dipping.

I like it.

Not being "dirty" rarely proves a cleaned coin.

I think it makes EF-40 and surfaces look OK. The reverse spot may be of concern but would probably respond well to Verdi-Care treatment to halt any incipient corrosion. No overt signs of cleaning as far as I can tell. Strike is pretty solid for the issue which almost always has some weakness in the star radials.

Seems like a decent example at a reasonable price.

I'm at EF40 too, the reverse holds it back a little. 50 is an ok price, but not great. I'm looking for a 10% discount too, but haven't found one yet :-).
