This quarter is being circulated in the US at the moment, and we don't know who is releasing them!

I'd pay $10 for one of them

What about you?

i'd just be worried about these 'coins'

they may be seen right now as a novelty but they bare a denomination and have a scary good reverse! whoever is striking and circulation them could be in deep trouble..

I suspect it is a real quarter, with altered obverse, like a Magician's coin. Novelty item.

I'd pay more than $10 for one. Looked through ebay and they don't have any up for auction yet.

Very bizarre. I'd guess these were stamped with a new obverse die directly over a real quarter.

Looks to be similiar to the Statehood Quarters "Headquarters" novelty items that were made in the early 2000's. They occasionally still turn up on ebay.

Political statements using coins has been around for a very long time. This is no different. Some people like him, some don't. At least we live in a free country where those things can still be done ...... for now anyway.

As far as the legal aspects go the guy is pushing it and is probably violating the law. When/if he gets caught probably no more than a fine and a hand slap unless they wanna make an example out of him.

Is it even possible to "re-mint" just one side of a coin?

If these are made from "real quarters" then I guess there is no objection to them, since Daniel Carr can do it.

It does look like an over-strike of a real quarter to me.

See the Scott restrike CSA half dollars. 1861-O halves with the rev planed off and then restruck using the CSA die while the obv rested on a brass plate.

The only mass produced counterfeit quarters I am aware of are 1982 D dated specimens that circulated in the late 1990's to early 2000's around the new york/new jersey area. I found a couple of them stuck to magnets back when TD Bank still had coin machines. Virtually all of them have been removed from circulation due to the magnets in coin counting machines, but every now and again a couple return to circulation when someone spends change they've horded for years.

The edge looks a bit odd. It might be a cap placed onto a real quarter as the reverse is from a pre 1999 coin and the obverse looks to be based on a 1999 and later quarter. I don't think it is an oversrtike in the same manner as Moonlight mint products.
