Very nice work @jamesicus. Any idea why the Romans started emphasizing the serifs on their coin inscriptions later in the Empire?

these serifs existed from in the beginning , and I think there was an influence from the majuscule book-hand on the inscriptions on metal of stone . albert

@antwerpen2306:

Of course serifs preceded written usage being originally employed by the Roman Capitalis monumentalis stone cutters.

@Spence:

I think there was a general decline in craftsmanship skills during the later Empire.

Good reading!

From my experience, the lowest point in terms of craftsmanship was during the lowest point of the Crisis (ca. 260-280). I seem to have deleted my picture, but I have a (non-barbarous) Gallienus Annona reverse where the reverse legend reads "I-I III III O III I-I" because the engraver couldn't make slanted lines.

Isn't the fishtailing on serifs just an artifact of striking without a collar?
(In particular, does it ever occur on letters whose bottom side doesn't point toward the center?)

Pretty sure something similar came up in a discussion of Maria Theresa thalers a few years back, but I can't recall the details precisely.

Yes, I have seen that debate previously, january1may -- and I think it has merit.
