Hello everyone,
I am new to coin collecting and Coin Community.
My brother gave me his coin collection about 2 weeks ago and as I started going through the coins, I began gaining major interest in this hobby. I have been searching for values for all of the coins I got and learned about the existence of mint errors, mint marks versus no marks, double dies, key dates, semi-key dates, grading scale,..... and I feel like I have gained a lot of knowledge, with tons yet to go obviously, but mainly text book. Need the experience now.
Any advice on how to sort the coins easier and faster would be greatly appreciated! I find myself spending a lot of time.
I am mainly collecting coins that has some value or potentially future value. When sorting through coins, first I usually put aside the following when going through a coin roll.
Pennies - everything that is 1989 and older, 1992, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2006, 2009 and 2015. The 90's are for Close and Wide "AM" and the 2000's for double dies.
Nickel - 1979 and older, 2005 D with Bison and 2014 P Design creep.
Dimes - 1989 and older, 1996 W (if I ever find one), 2015 and 2016 due to recent discoveries of errors. Maybe my grandchildren will thank me one day. BTW, dimes are a bit boring, which is an irony considering my name is
Roosevelt!
Quarters - 1979 and older, 1999 Delaware spitting horse, 2004 D Wisconsin with extra leaf and 2005 Minnesota extra tree.
Half Dollars - 1979 and older.
Dollar - all of them. It is at least a dollar each right?
Then I sort them out and look for specific errors or if the values based on year and condition by using the NGC price guide. I even had to create my own cheat sheet with specific coins to hunt for.
For now I am using my iphone to take a picture when examining the coin since looking through a magnifying loop is hurting my eyes. But I have ordered a Celestron 5 mp Infiniteview with LCD display and can't wait to use it. It will definitely make coin hunting easier.
Btw, attached are my 2 favorite coins.
