Got this in the mail yesterday along with that bracteate pfennig I posted:

Unusual-Arab-Byzantine-Follis...-Later-Imitation?

Reverse definitely has a large M with cross above, bungled "ANO" to left, and what looks like two lines of Arabic below.

Obverse I can't make out; it's either a poor copy of a Byzantine portrait, or just Arabic text.

Scanned through Zeno and Stephen Album and can't find anything like it.

Thoughts?

Looks like an overstrike, perhaps

Looking at the obverse picture again, I am pretty sure I see the arabic letter "la" (I call it the "twisty tie letter"), so the obverse is either a nimbate head above two lines of text, or three lines of text.

I'm with Ben on this one--it looks like an overstrike. Maybe get a rough ID on the Byzantine host coin, and then subtract out those elements to leave the remaining Arabic text? It seems like this is the sort of thing that they do on TV cops shows all the time...

Ahh, I am seeing it now! Thanks for the suggestion!

Did this happen often with these bronzes? I am only able to find one even remotely similar to this coin:
