I decided to start a new thread for the second batch I will be bathing in Acetone. If you saw the total coins in need of care on the first thread, don't worry, I won't be publishing results for every single coin, these just happen to be the worst of the lot. This time it is: 1953-s LWC1930 Luxembourg 5c 1916? German 10p 1948 Canada 1c I don't have much optimism about the 10 pfennig... The 10pf is one of those easily corroded iron issues. I doubt acetone is going to help it at all. There *are* ways to remove the rust, but they will alter the coin beyond what is typically acceptable.

Three out of four tuned out good in the first batch. I probably expect the same here. Good luck.

I was really surprised to see that the 10p was iron. Of course that perfectly explained its condition. It just seems like the least forward thinking thing to do making an iron coin, but...that was mid-WWI and maybe it was a case of using whatever you had left.

You may be able to improve the appearance on some of those, but it won't likely improve the value. It is subjective, but in my collection of low value world types, I favor appearance. Some of the green may come off the copper based coins. I've not done much with iron based coins, but I think it would respond much like a boat hull or farm implement.

Ok, here's what 36 hours in acetone did for these guys (and girl....and eagle ). As expected, the 10 pfennig is a loss. There is some verdigris that is more pronounced now, but luckily I got my Verdi-Care in today and will be testing that out soon!

It is sort of fun experimenting as your doing. Sometimes I wonder if in the end it is all worth the time and cost. However, you never know if someday you could recover a really valuable coin buried in just stuff.

I guess that's really the point. There are some sentimental reasons, but hopefully I will learn enough on low value coins that if I do happen to come across something special, I'll have a better idea of what to do.

Looking good. Quote: There is some verdigris that is more pronounced now, but luckily I got my Verdi-Care in today and will be testing that out soon! I am sure it will help. Quote: There are some sentimental reasons... Always a good reason.

Thanks posting your experiments Spruett. It's interesting to see the results.
I am looking forward to your Verdi-care trials...especially if you have any zinc coins to try out. I have some oxidized zinc coins I've been wondering about trying Verdi-care on.

Thanks for posting this. I've tried acetone but never for very long. I didn't think it would continue to make any difference after an hour or so.

Just like your last batch, I'm surprised how much change occurred. I would have guessed that most of the discoloration was heavy toning and corrosion that wouldn't come off. Did you notice much further change after the first hour to your 36 hour endpoint?

They probably didn't need 36 hours and part of that was being busy with other things and I figured it couldn't hurt. Part of my approach is seeing the change in the color of the acetone. Sometimes, the coins don't look any different but the acetone is slightly darker yellow/green which means it's doing something. Also, I've pulled some out that I thought were done after a couple hours and once the acetone evaporated there was what looked like oily spots on the coin that weren't there before so the acetone was working on something that hadn't quite dissolved yet. Of course, these were some of the very worst that I've posted. Most I've done lately haven't spent nearly that long in acetone and on some it didn't help at all. I mentioned the Hong-Kong 5 cent and Half-Rupee in the thread below and both of those have been posted in the World Coin Grading forum after getting acetone and Verdi-Care. If you're curious about Verdi-Care for the coins in this thread, here's the link: http://goccf.com/t/275977&whichpage=1Thanks again for your comments!
