This lady had the courage to stand up for her convictions and the fortitude to withstand the consequences. She was ahead of her time and rejected the status quo. A very worthy recipient. http://www.macleans.ca/news/canada/...new-10-bill/*** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by SilverDon 12/08/2016 6:58 pm

She was jailed on tax evasion, 1 Cent was the difference in the tax paid for a seat on the floor versus in the balcony.

As a Native born 7th generation Canadian , I am very disturbed at the progressive , elitist , globalist , politically correct , revisionist direction my country is currently on. To remove two of our most important Primeministers from our banknotes in this manner is disgusting and nothing but a politically motivated move. Not one in a million Canadians have a clue or could care less about a woman on a banknote who did not spend her entire life in our great country. Died in the good old USA in New York.

Likely an underestimation Jack of the supporters of Ms. Desmond. While I disagree with your opinion, you have a right to express it. Where someone dies is not usually up to them, her actions while alive were admirable. Not to be trivialized. Not sure you know the definition of progressive. Noun - a person advocating or implementing social reform, or new liberal ideas. Much like what Ms. Desmond did.

Jack, we cannot hold on to all elements of the past... A large group of us from our offices all across Canada submitted applications for Alice Wilson to be on that banknote... not everyone has heard of her either, but that does not make her, or Ms. Desmond, any less important in Canadian history.

Roger.... I am not sure you're allowed to use the term..... "Old Man " in our progressive LIBERAL it's 2015 society . Smacks of racism and ageism to the elder Caucasians , myself included in our society. . I wear the badge proudly though. I am a dinosaur in our enlightened world and am not about to change . Out west we do tend to think a lot differently than our Liberal Eastern counterparts.

Desmond is an excellent(and favourite of the top 5)choice in my opinion. Looking forward to seeing who will be chosen to replace Sir Wilfrid Laurier on the new $5 as our next iconic Canadian. I think this time around the selection should encompass both men and women. Who knows, perhaps PET will make the cut! Glad to see the B.O.C. is respecting the achievements of both of our most recognizable and deserving Prime Ministers by moving them to the higher denominations. It also appears that the Queen or future King will continue to be represented on future issues of the $20 banknote. Should be interesting which design changes and security features will be incorporated or if any lessons have been learned from the current polymer series. Of course that will be a topic for another day and discussion thread once we near the release dates. http://www.bankofcanada.ca/2016/12/...-able-woman/

Some historians view Pierre Trudeau as the individual that divided this country.
Special designations & entitlements & laws that apply to different Canadians.
Arguably, his ideology outweighed reason and rationale regarding the constitution and his need to push it through.
Though a brilliant man with extreme intelligence, a few mistakes can out weigh all the good he did. Weather this is the case is up for debate.
I agree with pacific, we may be kindred spirits, PET did IMO create the divide between east and west that is evident to this day.
I love Canada, though currently it seems to be held together with safety pins, we need healing. This can only be achieved through debate, thoughtful discussion and ideas.
We need a strong Canada.
I would not be a supporter of putting PET on a banknote.

Quote: I had never heard of her before the candidates were announced Neither had I. One of the most interesting and rewarding things about collecting coins and banknotes is (re)learning or rediscovering fascinating and relevant Canadian history. Take for example the Franklin expedition, it was cool being in Halifax last year not only to learn about it but also get an opportunity to tour the HMCS Sackville. Regardless of who appears on the new $5, I'm sure given the success and positive response, the final choice will be a good one. PET was just tossed in there to stimulate discussion. Slightly off topic - the Desmond $10 note will be preceded by a commemorative $10 note mid next year. Information was included in a backgrounder in the press release and missed getting noticed.

I hate how PC the world is coming to. It's really getting out of hand. Could you just imagine having 5 different note designs each year like the commemorative quarter programs in the US?
