Fascinated with some Indo-Sassanian images I'm seeing out of India and wondered if there were any books/guides anyone could recommend? I'd love to learn more about these.
Thanks Much, Blake

I don't know of a book, but I would mention that Frank Robinson of NY usually has some very choice examples in almost every one of his auctions.

@Harmonica
Thanks for the link. Are you saying that Sellwood's and Gobl's books are only Sassanian references? And can you give me the titles of those books?
Thanks! Blake

No problem, this is why we have the forum.
Yes, they are only Sassanian works. Sasanian numismatics by Robert Gobl is the standard reference with An Introduction to Sassanian Coins by Sellwood being a close second.
I have yet to procure a copy but I also heard good thing about "The Sunset collection". It is a book documenting a private Persian coin collection. It may have Indo-Sassanian in it as well.
BobL and Ancientnoob are more well versed in Eastern coins than I am (I being the real "Anceintnoob"). Hopefully they can chime in too.
I can't seem to find it online but I believe the University of California Irving made a pdf listing of all Sassanian reference books/articles. Some of the references were for the Celetor which is now online digitized. It very well could have had some stuff on the Indo-Sasanian coins but I am not seeing it.

Which coins are you looking for specifically? Actual Sassanian coins made in India, or the drammas based on the Sassanian design?

I believe that Michael Mitchiner's "Oriental Coins and Their Values: The Ancient and Classical World, 600 BC - AD 650" is sometimes cited as a reference for Indo-Sasanian. However it's long out of print and extremely expensive when an old edition appears on the market. The "Sunrise Collection," mentioned above, is published by and available through CNG and includes coins from a large private collection (believed by a number of folks to be the collection of the owner of Pars Coins). Neither Mitchiner nor "The Sunrise Collection" is specifically focused on Indo-Sasanian - each includes coinage from a number of Central and South Asian cultures. A couple of articles in "Numismatic Studies" (volume 4 from 1996 and volume 6 from 2001) by P. Bhatia cover Indo-Sasanian. I suspect these are hard, or impossible, to find. Quote: BobL and Ancientnoob are more well versed in Eastern coins... Way too much credit given to me there...but thanks. Beyond Parthia and Elymais, I'm out of my element. Noob (Nate) is a savant where this stuff is concerned, though. Unfortunately he doesn't visit us much here anymore. Here are two pages of books and articles devoted to Sasanian coinage, though not specifically to Indo-Sasanian: http://grifterrec.rasmir.com/refere...ce-sas1.htmlhttp://grifterrec.rasmir.com/refere...ce-sas2.html

If I ever stop being lazy and get around to taking the photos, I have been working on a reference guide for the past six months to publish here for free.

I've been working on a reference guide now for the past several weeks covering all areas of ancient coin collecting. I'm into it now about 70 pages and working on the Byzantine period. It's a long way from being complete, but when I'm done it will also be free to all who would like a copy.

Well that's part of why I am looking for published information at this point. My interest has been piqued by photos of coins "from India" that look like this: I keep seeing these referred to as "Indo-Sassanian" coins--whether this is correct or not I can't say. These appeal to me and I'm wondering if there are "differences" in this series that can be collected in any manner (mints/portraits/reverses/dates?) ... since you mention the possibility of "Sassanian coins made in India"--that sounds like fun too!

Thanks for the leads and suggestions. These are helpful.... (and expensive too! But I do understand, and agree with, the buy-the-book-before-the-coin approach...)

Quote:That's exactly what I am working on I realistically won't have the whole thing done for some time (busy time in my life) but here is a little write-up I did a couple months back: http://goccf.com/t/263922&whichpage=3#2291540 Yes! This is exactly the new obsession. And you are working on what I'm hoping to learn.... the "differences" and when/where they fall. I'm specifically interested in the links to Gujarat as that is what got me looking at these anyway... and am interested in following all of the links in and around Gujarat in terms of the history, etc. @Finn235, any chance you can repost that here in this thread? I think it would help.
