Sometimes when I get bored, I just go and cruise the ancients section on ebay. I have maybe 150 coins in my backlog, just waiting for me to either figure out the attribution (for LRBs) or have an "Aha!" moment on ebay.

I have had this coin for nearly a full year, from a lot of 97 coins for $100. Randomly saw a nearly identical one listed on ebay a couple days ago

Cleopatra VII
51-30 BC
Neopaphos, Cyprus
Laureate head of Zeus right
Zeus standing left, holding wheat ear (off flan) and scepter, drapery coming from elbow. Star above (also off flan)
No legend anywhere on the coin!
Ref: Cox 128

Hopefully the Cyprus secret service won't come knocking to "repatriate" my newly identified coin!

This is good news, however, since it reinforces my hunch on several similarly shaped small coins from the lot featuring the bust of a female someone or other....
Rest in Peace

Nailing a VII is always sweet. I can imagine your joy when you figured it out. Good luck with the rest of your searches.

I used to have a backlog of unidentified coins, but then I discovered CCF...

Nice work getting that ID.

Nice find there, Steve.

Are you suggesting you may have some portrait coins of Cleopatra in the bunch? That would be awesome - but I'm not sure if that's what you're alluding to.

I'm not 100% sure if it's her, but given the huge number of Ptolemaic bronzes in the lot (close to 20 of the 97?) I think it is more likely than other possibilities. I'll have to see if I can find them again to get some pictures. They all have a very distinctive convex shape where the obverse is almost curved and the reverse is flat. Several also have flan handles, if memory serves.

That would be a remarkable find or finds. Looking forward to seeing pics of the possibilities.

Perhaps you already know this, but the May 2008 Celator had a great article on Cleo portrait coins. Available online here:

Just realized I never posted the pics:

With that much damage on the reverse, I am not sure I could attribute this one firmly; It certainly has a very unique shape at any rate.
