Do tell. You're saying it's not a clash or chip? Do tell.

I feel it is abrasion trying to remove a clash. Sometimes an area gets over worked and the depth of the polishing will reduce devices and when the coin is struck it leaves an uneven area on the die. The abrasion is also from several polishings of the die to remove the "TY" from LIBERTY on this area.

Abrasion on the should to remove that clash also took its toll on this die. This is a muti-hub die. So it is less often affected by the die sinking that the single squeeze dies create.

Coop - I see that you disagree with Mike Diamond. One of his points is that this happens on at least 8 different dies of the 1973-D reverse. How does your theory account for that? You are saying that would be abrasion on 8 different dies in the exact same area?

Granted, he says the subsidence in this specific area on 8 different dies is a mystery, but I cannot understand the case you are making for why he is wrong.

I do understand what you are saying, but I do not understand why it applies to what is known about the 1973-D.

This is indeed one of the dies afflicted by a recurring die subsidence error:
