I don't know if any of you have ever worked at a bank, but this summer I plan on working as a teller in a bank. I plan on seeing a lot of interesting coins but dont know if i'll be able to do anything about it. Has anyone here ever worked at a bank and if so how did you preserve the coins you wanted to keep?

Yep. You can "buy" them from the bank. I'd hold off when you first start cause you don't want them to feel uneasy as to why a new employee is constantly digging through their drawer

I suppose it wouldnt be a problem as long as you didnt let it get in the way of your actual work. I know i'd be fired the first day going through all the coins laying around lol.

I currently am a Teller. Actually being a collector helped me get the job because I know a lot about money.
You can buy money all the time from your drawer, but its better to get a bunch and save it up then buy it all at once. You cant actually buy money out of your own drawer. But you can get another teller to either sell it to you or watch you sell it to your self. Its something that has to be done with another teller though.
You will be surprised though how few things you will actually see. I thought when I got the job that I would see all kinds of stuff, but I almost never find much of anything good. You will have a new appreciation for the banking world and why we do the things we do. Its nothing like I ever thought a bank would work.

I will tell you though, if the bank knows that you only want a summer job they might not hire you. Banks look for long term employees. They see it as a security risk to have someone be a teller only for a short time.
I also dont know if you have any other cash handling experience but if you dont you might want to tell them about your collecting, it might count to them as cash handling experience, since a teller position does require to have cash handing experience.
And to your question, I have trained all the other tellers that if they see a nice coin to either not touch it or only touch the rims. Hehe its kind of become a joke now cause I go crazy when I see somethings they do with the money. Other than that I just make sure to keep what I want away from everything else. I normally put it in an envelope so I can buy it.

too late, I already got interviewed. The position was for a summer floating teller, so they know I won't be there long. I worked for years as a soccer referee, there was some but really not much cash handling experience. I got interviewed last Tuesday, but don't know when I'll get called back.

Well good luck! Let us know how it goes.
With a floater position hopfully youll be at one branch for at least a little while. It's harder to get stuff when you float around unless they keep you at one branch for a while.
I generally only buy stuff out of my drawer like once every one or two months. That way its not as big of a deal to the other tellers and doesn't get in the way of the every day job, but its a little different when your moving around, since you may not have the same drawer for too long.
Good luck though!!

I would assume cash handling experience is doing a job that involves the handling of money like a cashier.

Cash handling experience would be, being a teller, or a cashier. Any job that involves working in front of a cash drawer every time your at work. Also having had balanced a cash drawer after each of your shifts is another thing that they normally look for.
How many days ago did you have your interview? Did they tell you when they would get back with you?

i also work for a bank, we are allowed to buy cash out from our tills but the real good stuff lyes in the coin counting machine that we are not allowed to buy cash out of. I found away around this by volunteering to clean and repair the machine when it gets clogged or coin bags are filled. I simply replace coins that id like to keep with their nonvalueable equivelents so the numbers equal out at the end of the day. Ive found broadstrikes, silver coins, and old foriegn coins from the 1890's this way.
