imo they should....... abolish the penny in 2009, go all out and make a fancy looking 2009 special reverse one for the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Cent but after that eliminate it. start to phase out dollar bills, create good dollar coin, promote use of half and dollar coins |

I want to see the mint come out with silver coins for circulation again, it would likely help the U.S.'s economy. -PP

 Perhaps I'm little tired to process tonight, but something seems odd here. For instance the way this question is broken out: "FAVOR ABOLISHING THE PENNY - BY INCOME AND GENDER" The segmentation of responses against income seems weighted towards the lower end. I may just be nitpicking here, but if there was more several segments from 75K onward, a different impression may be given by the results. Or how about "Thinking about the one dollar denomination, which would you prefer?" Some could easily base their answer on memories of past failures of dollar coins. Is that the right approach to determine a solution? These questions strike me as posed to ensure negative reinforcement. How could these questions be worded differently? Consider our northern neighbor, Canada, where 50c and Dollar coins were once unpopular in circulation due to size, etc. Yet, despite that past experience, the adoption of Loonie/Twoonie coins over the last few decades has been an unqualified success. Do you think Canada is all that different that we can't make it work here? Edited by KurtS

I think part of the problem is a lot of people have not ever seen a dollar coin if you look at the chart is said 75% have not seen a new $1 coin, how could people even start to like them if you have never had one. The mint made over 940 million in 2007. If you go to the bank they don't even have any. So where are all these $1 coin that they want us to use, You cant tell me that 940 million have been hoarded by collectors. If so someone has sure wasted some money by hanging on the those

Interesting analysis, Kurt! If I have learned anything from following politics, it is that any poll can have the results you want, as long as you phrase your questions in a particular way. I think I will do my own survey here at work. I am sure I can come up with near 100% in favour of the dollar coin over the dollar bill, and elimination of the cent!  |

Years ago.....I used to hate the penny....I always said "Just round up and donate the money to Jerry's Kids or something".....Of course now I eyeball EVERY cent I get, to inspect it from a collectors standpoint......but you know.....I'm not bothered by the penny.......AT ALL......who cares ?....if they do away with the Cent.......it doesn't make a difference to me at all..........I'm not "agitated by them" or "happy to have them".......I just really couldn't care less........leave it the way it is......or change it..... I shrug my shoulders to it.......cause I'll just adapt to whatever is done or not done like everyone else will. The exact same thing with the paper $1.00 bill......that dollar note does not "bother" me...... so much so that I want to "abolish" it !....... switching to a dollar coin will not make me walk around with a big ole smile on my face everyday for 17 years because enough Americans agreed with me to make Congress and the Mint get rid of this "paper dollar" and switch to a longer lasting coin........again...... it causes me no great "agitation" nor would it give me any degree of satisfaction to be rid of it.If they can save enough money to pay down the National Debt or something......by all means ......"git er done".....if not......."leave well enough alone for Pete's sake".......  .. So true! I guess this poll set off my BS meter somehow since results can be pre-determined to a degree. I simply doubt whether a poll is the best way to determine the success of a dollar coin program. Just replace the $1 bill with a useful dollar coin and I think it will be adopted--simple as that. True, true, polls can have results skewed based on the phrasing of the question. I could not believe vast majority never saw a Presidential dollar. Looks the Presidential dollar series is doomed to fail. I bet in a year or two mintage numbers come crashing down. Edited by mycrob

 And why not? Its not like the government has never imposed something on us "for our own good", regardless of negative popularity! But seriously, they should just do it already and people will adjust. This is not like seat-belt laws or smoking bans (both bad, IMHO, even though I choose to wear a seatbelt and not smoke). Having a "dollar bill" is not a "right" but a (so-called) convenience. |
