Whatever you do, if you are buying expensive coins, buy them slabbed by pcgs/ngc.

Personally, while coins have been a good investment lately, I would NOT look at coins as an investment. Buy them for your own enjoyment, and if they go up in value it's just an added bonus.
That being said, the key dates of popular series will always be popular. The 1909 s-vdb, 1916-d merc, 1893-s and 1889-cc morgans, you get the idea.

Buy them because you like them. If they go up in value, bonus; if not, you still have something you can cherish!

Buy them because you like them is good advice. I apply this in a pure sense with low value coins I buy but for things that are more expensive I cant help but take the investment side into some consideration at least in terms of holding value against inflation. I think some expensive coins may be overvalued currently. Of course, what is low valued and high valued is relative to the collector. I've never dropped that kind of cash on one coin myself. At that level though the 1909 S-VDB looks like a short run winner, probably long run too. I have always bought into the notion of Bowers' term of Optimal Collecting Grade when it comes to such matters.

Also, you said beautiful and you have lots of silver. I think you could pick up a pretty nice $20 St. Gaudens gold for $1500.

How about $1500 worth of Wheats..... take a long time to go through, maybe you'll find that 1909 VDB, maybe not......It's a good chance you also might more than double your return and enjoyment with as many Varieties & key dates you might find. For me...... it's about the hunt, but hey......that's me.
