Picked this up for $60 at auction. What do you think it would grade? I see most end up in the 63-64 range. I did turn down the lighting on the picture so you could actually see the coin not flooded out by light.

I agree you got a good deal on that coin. Most of them it seems were melted down because they did not sell. I think you doubled your money.
Rest in Peace

Congratulations on a great pick and a great price.

First, there is not hint of rub on the high points, and this commemorative has a lot of high points, so I have no doubt it is Mint State. Plus, the luster is unbroken and smooth, typical for this date for this commemorative.

Second, I see no sign of dipping or cleaning. This is one of those commemorates that you can find in this natural bright condition. The watery luster is also typical.

Last, the number and placement of the bag marks or ticks on this example are minimal without any being in particularly bad locations. I'd give this an MS-64.

You did GREAT on that buy!

I think 64 sounds right. Indeed, a handsome example.

The rim damage seen on the obverse below and to the right of the "F" in "HALF DOLLAR" might cause the coin to receive a "Details" grade rather than a regular mint state grade because this type of damage is generally something that happens after the coin has left the mint.

The coin also appears to have one or more die cracks on the obverse through the lettering, but this might be an artifact of the lighting used for the image; if present on the coin, the crack(s) would not prevent the coin from being graded.

All that said, it appears to be an attractive and collectible example of the coin, I'm just not sure it would grade as a "near gem" if sent to one of the major services. Nonetheless, congrats on the purchase!

Late with my reply ... home now from family trip for Christmas.

Your photos are clear enough to show all issues ... alas one of the downsides of digital photographs is they show every issue.

Concur with commems observation of the obverse rim hit at 5:30am ... that is likely a deal breaker with a TPG and a resultant 'details' grade.

The obverse fields show sufficient chatter to suggest MS63 as the possible grade ...

I am intrigued by the apparent die break on the obverse ... starts at ME of AMERICA and continues ...

Intersting coin ... I'm in at MS63 (details) as noted above.
