Only one of these I have ever seen but it is what I think a capped die should look like. Really appreciate some help with this one.

2.5g 19.5mm - rim slightly flattened outward on obverse side creating that extra 0.5mm

Not a die cap but a struck through late stage die cap very nice!

Thanks Slamnbass, that's what I meant. Too many (good) interruptions today to think straight. I meant to ask if it was a "struck through capped die" or as one website calls it a "late stage capped die strike." Seems like a pretty good error.

One more question. How do you grade such a thing? The coin is uncirculated and based on the reverse a fairly high grade. But the obverse is, well, smashed, so how does that figure in to the final grade of the coin? Just wondering if something like this is worth sending off if it would grade high.

Good question I believe these just get certified 'authentic' and do not receive a number grade but lets wait see what others say. Did you find this roll hunting?

Not in a roll. I was buying at a foreign coins auction and a stray lot of US error coins came up. Wrong buyers for that lot so I got a really good price on a pile of error coins. Now I am trying to learn what they are as I mostly do varieties.

Looks like a very good pickup. I like it. I was getting excited that you found it in a roll, but cool nonetheless.
