Thanks Slamnbass, that's what I meant. Too many (good) interruptions today to think straight. I meant to ask if it was a "struck through capped die" or as one website calls it a "late stage capped die strike." Seems like a pretty good error.
One more question. How do you grade such a thing? The coin is uncirculated and based on the reverse a fairly high grade. But the obverse is, well, smashed, so how does that figure in to the final grade of the coin? Just wondering if something like this is worth sending off if it would grade high.
Good question I believe these just get certified 'authentic' and do not receive a number grade but lets wait see what others say. Did you find this roll hunting?
Not in a roll. I was buying at a foreign coins auction and a stray lot of US error coins came up. Wrong buyers for that lot so I got a really good price on a pile of error coins. Now I am trying to learn what they are as I mostly do varieties.
