Hi all, I have a coin (Hungarian?) that appears to be silver (0.9g and 17mm) that I need help identifying...date and country of origin and denomination. Thanks in advance for any guidance or information. CPrince

Hi CPrince! I'm not an expert on these coins, but I might be able to point you in the right direction. The coin is definitely Hungarian, appears hand-struck, and at first glance appears to be the type known as the "Madonna and Child" Issue from the late Middle Ages to the 1600s. But there is no date on it (most authentic examples have the date either above the Madonna and Child or the Shield, or else (even if faded) on one of the edges of the coin), and the text on the side with the Madonna doesn't appear to be Renaissance either. It is translated as "Fr. Joseph Apostolic King of Hungary", and appears to date the coin/medal to the reign of one of the three kings of Hungary who had Joseph in their name: Joseph I, Holy Roman Emperor (Reigned 1687-1711 as King of Hungary) Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor (Reigned 1780-1790 as King of Hungary) And, of course, Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary (Reigned 1848-1916). I would look at the last king first, based on the "FR" which I assume stands for "Franz" (perhaps the hand-crafted appearence indicates a nineteenth century Renaissance-inspired copy?): on the upper right-hand side of the "Madonna" are what appear to be a shield with a letter in it (possible mintmark?) and the Roman Numeral XV (Regnal Year? Year of production?), both of which could help as well. Hope this helps and good luck!

Very interesting coin. The style of the characters in the inscriptions seems older than the fineness of execution for the design.

I couldn't find a coin exactly like this and may be a later copy? The obverse is very similar to the denar design under Ferdinand (except with Franz Joseph on the reverse instead) and the reverse shield is very similar to the shield on the Franz Joseph era 100 Korona I was looking at (shield segments in the same relative positions). I hope this helps.

So far, it looks like someone with too much time on their hands made up an example of what would a classic Hungarian denar look like if they were still made under Franz Josef. I'm seriously half considering SCA as a possibility. EDIT: it's in Krause! I think. Hungary X#5. Commemorative for 1000th anniversary of Hungary in 1896. That... makes surprisingly much sense, actually. And here's the NGC page. Though it's supposed to be smaller.

Thanks all,
This forum is pretty awesome!
Your points have been very helpful. The Fr Joseph was throwing me...that and the lack of a date. I also have two denars (1566, 1567) from when Maximilian was King of Hungary, and this coin was very similar but absent a date and, again, the Fr Joseph didn't fit b/c his rule was several hundred years later.
Thanks for the education.

Quote: is there any collectible value for these? These are pretty common, even in great condition like yours, and can be purchased for $20 to $40.
