Picked up two coins that I thought were interesting today... But I honestly don't know a dang lick about them. They just really stood out and I thought they were fascinating. All I can tell is that one is gold the other silver... and they're from around the 1500's however I don't have a guide to tell me otherwise. Any info on these I would appreciate. Thanks *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by AgCoinAu 12/28/2016 9:57 pm

Top is a gold 2 shu, pretty sure Man'en era (1860s). It's about .300 gold that was given an acid bath to enrich the color. There were a few weight standards; you would need a jewelry scale to tell for sure.
Bottom is a silver bu, probably 1850s or early 60s. I'll need the calligraphy on the reverse to attribute it more accurately. The flowers around the edge of the coin can be either all normal, or one can be upside down. The one next to the top left corner is inverted. Supposedly, some are incredibly valuable and worth hundreds of dollars, but I have yet to meet a collector who us willing to pay that.
The two together should be worth about (US) $50-60.

As I reply to this question, I do not have access to my copy of 19th Century Krause World Coin catalog.
This publication would most probably provide the way to a full attribution.
Perhaps someone else may have a copy, and be able to find out for you.

Well I was way off on my dates.. hahhaha Little dissapointed to hear what the value is as well.... usually my dealer is pretty fair with his prices but there's a fair discrepancy between what you think this lot is worth and what I had paid.... Just goes to show you..... even when you build a relationship... you need to count on your own research to know what you're getting and if it's a reasonably priced... My bad I suppose..

Let your dealer know. Your attitude of accepting the error in the value as your own indicates you can do so calmly and without accusations.
There is that chance that the dealer just ball parked the price as they were unfamiliar with these coins, too.
At the least, they might be willing to give you a great price on something else you like.

There was a Japanese gold "coin" first issued in the late 1500s. Mind you, it's pretty massive at close to 5 ounce. For more information, check here: http://www.coinweek.com/world-coins...e-gold-oban/As for the price if you really want one... you can most certainly buy a house with that money!

Can you post the other side of the bu coin? I am not at this point ruling out that yours could be worth more than $30.
Can you post the weight or at least the dimensions of the 2 shu?
Mind you also that the $30 figure is what I paid for mine, in a no-reserve auction starting at 99 cents. The combined "buy it now" price from a store such as ACSB would be well over $200 for the pair. I certainly cannot fault a LCS for being optimistic and choosing a mid-high price

BU type from the inverted Sakura is "B-a", Ansei era 1854-1860. I believe it is one of the more common types... Hartill's guide doesn't even go that deep into the varieties.

Finn: Thanks for all the info... I like the coins and love the fact that I will have to do a whole lot more research on 'em even if I had over paid I think I'll keep 'em...
