Purchased bulk coinage and found this one in lot. A friend identified it as an 1893 copy. I can not locate it in my Krause coin catalog for this date. Obverse is heavily worn. Would this be a fake or the real deal? I'm suspecting this would be KM 56, if real.

First off that does not look at all like an 1893 $2.50 gold coin should look. Second, KM 56 is not the design of 1893 it was the design of 1834-1839. Third, it says copy on the 2x2. Did it come that way? If so, I highly doubt that someone would write copy on a "real deal".
Lastly, it does not even look like gold.
Rest in Peace

Looks more like a fantasy rather than a copy.

Fantasy means a coin or token that never actually existed and was never actually issued by the authority presented, in this case the U.S..

This is so far away from what the actual coin looks like that it is not something most collectors would have any interest in.

The price of $1.00 on the 2x2 is probably accurate.

Thanks all. This is exactly what I thought, but I just wanted to be sure. And yes, I realize the data range for KM 56. I just wanted to confirm and you guys definitely did that!

I'm thinking it was a game counter.

Although it's not dated 1893, here is an example of "the real thing." The design was the same in 1893; only date was different.

Thank you!

Believe it or not that coin is only in a PCGS MS-63 holder. It's at least one grade point higher than that. I've never cracked out and tried for more because there not much upside between MS-63 and 64.
