I wanted to throw this out there for an opinion but while cycling through a bunch of wheats I noticed the "D" on 1948 seemed thinner and smaller than other "D" mintmarks on other 1940's coins. Any history on this or do mintmarks (presumed hand punched) vary in dimensions?

The mint used two different Denver mintmark styles in the 1940s. MMS-002 was used from 1934-1945, while MMS-003 was used from 1946-1953.
You can see all Lincoln Cent mintmark styles here: http://www.varietyvista.com/01a%20L...20Styles.htm

Also, I believe your 1948-D is made with a late stage die and has Die Deterioration, making features seem thinner.

That is some great information, thank you.

Adding to the complexity, found a thin 44 "D".

Lots of variables here, including circulation wear, die condition at time of striking, grease effects and so on.
Rest in Peace

It seems with the Frog once again.

Nothing showing but normal variations from die uses at different points in their lives.

Also there can be a case of a punching on the die for the mint mark that was weak. (making a thinner mint mark) or a deeply punched mint mark. (making the mint mark appear fuller in shape)
