I've been looking to possibly "invest" in a 1 or 5 grain gold bar. (Pathetic. I know. But I'm poorer than a pile o poo right now.) whenever I put "5 grain gold bar" into ebay, along comes with a bunch of 1 grain silver bars. And for how much? About $3. A few google searches and calculations later, I find that one grain of pure silver has a volume of 6.17 cubic millimeters. That is about 1/60 of the size of a PENNY. One SIXTIETH of a PENNY. For THREE DOLLARS. I can buy 1 OUNCE of silver for just over 5 times more than that. BECAUSE LOGIC.

No, because there is no profit in making and selling items worth a quarter. if you want to buy gold, you can buy 1/10 oz gold eagles for around $120. If you can't afford even those, you shouldn't be buying gold.

I guess I can afford 1/10 ounce bars, but that would leave me with only $10.

Did you mean "gram" or "grain" or are they both the same thing. I see 1 gram .999 fine gold bars for around 50$ - does that price compare to a 1/10 ounce Gold Eagle that (I think) is .925 gold? I never was good at math.

Roy, here's my Two Cents. You can buy a half gram of gold for around $50. Maybe, instead of trying to spend, save, and maybe this time next year, you can buy something better. Just because you have money, doesn't mean you have to spend it, wait for a good deal to come. with Andrew also

I'm spending my money in hopes of profit at the coin show in May. So far, I bought an 1838 large cent and basically doubled my money. Hoping to do the same, not necessarily with gold or silver, again.

Roy, make sure you are including shipping costs, and the time it has taken. Dont rush into it so fast. You got lucky with the large cent. Congrats, but let it happen naturally. Let the deals come to you. Because sometimes what you think is a good deal might not be. You have to factor everything

It's always tough to wait for the right thing to show up when you have money in-hand.

But ill bet there have been lots of times when you've seen something you really loved but didn't have the money.

Wait for something you love. Don't forget that there are plenty of small, old, world gold coins, many in NGC or PCGS holders for protection, that are very near their gold melt value.

Wouldn't it be neat to have a dozen different countries gold coins, all TPG, for a little more than melt value?

Creativity and patience form the best collections.

I've never bought any gold with the thought of selling it for profit -- so take this with a grain of salt -- I feel that those tiny little bits of gold are novelty items. So you have to ask yourself who will buy it from you. They aren't scarce.

1 gram=15.4 grains. 1 oz troy=479 grains. so 1 grain gold=$2.40 and 1 grain silver=3.3 cents. These are today's prices in US$ .

So clearly for silver, the markup on these tiny things is nothing short of ludicrous. You could get 2 silver dimes (nearly 69 grains of silver) and have money left over for one $3 silver grain "bar".

nss-52 -- that is one great article. Nothing like those photos to show just how tiny those things are.

That's me as well which is why I haven't purchased any coins yet much less bullion. I have looked at silver bars that are more in my price range but for investment, not quick profit. For profit, I would try to find deals on actual coins.

That's a nice article nss-52. I don't think I could even find a 1 grain bar in a standard envelope if it came that way! I guess I'll have to get the 5 grain for my golden BB project.
