Mint halts production after legislation flaw detected The Philadelphia and Denver Mints struck circulation-quality 2008-P and 2008-D Sacagawea dollars for at least two months before U.S. Mint officials alerted Congress of a technical flaw in the Native American $1 Coin Act that prohibited the coin's production. http://www.coinworld.com/news/cwhl.asp?uID=&hlID=5

Can't read the article, but those two months were probably Nov and December of 2007 before the act was even signed. The act wasn't signed until late December and the "flaw" was discovered and publicised back in January. And the Two months of production was probably very small because they were only planning to produce them to sell to collectors, not to circulated. And finally striking the coins isn't that big a deal. Issuing them would be.

I thought the "tiff" with the Legislation had since been worked out weeks ago and that we ARE going to get the 2008 Sacajewea coin....no problem now ! I thought this was already worked out and "corrected"..? Would it then be "illegal" for them to "distribute" these that they minted "before" it was worked out ?.......shouldn't be ! So, they should have "destroyed" any made instead of just "halting" production and then "resuming" production again ?

I'm as confused as you Eaglefoot....I was all excited that I was going to be able to 2008 to my books. I would be pretty annoyed if the books went from 2007 straight to 2009--stuff like that drives me nuts!

You are absolutely correct Eaglefoot, on Feb 29 President Bush signed H.R. 5478 which fixed the issue of the 2008 Sackies- they are legal again The part that I find fascinating about this is the fact that the bill was introduced in the House on Monday the 25th and it made its way to the President's desk by Friday the 29th.

The mint origionally had the 2008 Sackies set to go on sale Jan 17th along with the Kennedy half dollars. Just a day or two before they "discovered" the problem and pulled the sale. At the time I speculated in another thread that some dollar coins had already been minted. The Feb 29 law makes the coins legal so there will be no rarities due to this situation.

There is no flaw and the coins will be sold in rolls and bags thru the mint in the near future.

HOWEVER............. The Home Shopping Network will get their hands on those "First Strike Illegal Sacajewea" coins.....the first ones minted in dark/secret rooms and not ever to be released to ANYONE EXCEPT THEM ! ....and only recently made "legal" for sale with recent Legistlation designed for these coins in a deal between the Government and HSN company....And these will be on sale later this year for "low" unheard of sale price of just a mere $35.00 per coin unbelievable bargain ! ..... ....... ........ ....... I can just see it now.....be sure to get em in time for Christmas...this deal will NEVER be offered again !......Watch and see if I'm not correct !....Isn't this just like something they'd try to do ?.......huummmmmm?

I absolutely agree 100% with Eaglefoot and the HSN thing. They WILL find a way to sell them with that spin. They WILL, WILL, WILL.
It's sickening.
