If it were only only one side I'd be leaning towards "natural".
But the toning being pretty much the same on BOTH sides has me leaning towards "artificial".

Looks artificial, especially with those blue blotches on the obverse. Detail is around EF-40 and the 1896-S is pricey in EF and above. I would guess someone tried to make this coin look better than it is and ended up hurting the value rather badly. I wouldn't consider it now at anywhere near EF pricing.

Without the color job that is a pretty nice 1896-S. If it were once in AU condition it would have been worth about $700. It probably was an EF coin that someone got cheap and waned to juice up a bit. I have a 96-S and good ones are hard and expensive to obtain.
Rest in Peace

Not market acceptable in my opinion. Someone killed a decent Morgan. Too bad....

Right, Dave, someone killed a coin. Greed.....like cleaning it with wire mesh.

1896-S is a conditionally scarce date as well... Probably would be worth a couple hundred bucks if not for the potato ride through the oven it took.

If you look at the obverse for elevation chromatics, ie differences in color between elements at different levels of elevation on the coin that are close together, you don't find it. Real toning displays this. This is a baked potato special.
