Hi guys, Happy New Year to everybody!

I would like to report an interesting edge lettering error find on a gold 40 francs coin of Napoleon I, struck during 1812:

The obverse and reverse seem to have been struck as usual, and also the weight (12.85gm) is as expected.

I have never encountered such an oddity on a french gold coin of Napoleon, despite of the huge output of the Paris mint.

I am wondering if anybody else has seen such an oddity.

That is a nice find. I'd bet most owners never even look at the edge lettering. Good eyes!

Interesting edge lettering error.
Around the time this coin was struck, edge lettering was not impressed using collars.

Instead, the planchet was placed between two bars that slid in opposite directions, with the planchet between them. The bars rolled the edge lettering onto the planchets. If the planchet or one of the bars has moved in a manner that was not normal, a double impression of the lettering is possible.

Thank you for the positive feedback on this report.

I think one can on the reverse where the planchet slipped out of the edger bars, it is at 7 o'clock (below the first "1" numeral in the date) and at 8 o'clock above the "E" letter in EMPIRE).

The star on the edge appears triple, therefore the coin must have been three times impressed by the edger bars on this spot.

A clear mint-error in my opinion, which passed through the quality control of the mint.
