Hello,

I've been learning a lot about coins through here and I thank you all for the replies and valuable information.

I found these two dates while CRH and would like to confirm a couple of things.

1955 Wheat penny "Poor Man's die". Not a true Doubled die and is caused by Die Deterioration right?

Last 5 of the date.

Question-On-1955-Poor-Man's-DDO-And-1969-S-LMC......poor-Man's-DDO?

1969-S LMC BU- I didn't find any information about DDO that matches this so can I assume that it is also Die Deterioration? Is there such thing as 1969-S "poor man's die"? I hope these are clear enough.

The poor man's DDO I would call Strike Doubling.

Thanks coin197. The same for the 1969-S right? Is each number of the date a separate die or not? If not, why only the last "5" shows this and not all 4 numbers of the date?

The 1955 is Die Deterioration, the 1969-S is Mechanical Doubling or sometimes called Strike Doubling.

I've learned so much about this perusing the topics here. There are only a handful of things to look for in most cases to distinguish between true Double Die, Machine Doubling ( Strike Doubling), and Die Deterioration. I bet there are several topics posted each day concerning this with great answers and reference photos.

From what I remember, I posted one coin with a question and it was determined to be Die Deterioration. From then on, potential DDO or DDR topics have been a go-to and very helpful.

The 55 is a poor mans doubled die,worn die. The 69-S I don't think it is called a worn die and not MD but I do not remember the correct term,sorry. Coop will be along soon to set us straight.

So I guess it is clear that 1969-S is a MD, Strike Doubling to be precise right? But seems like the 1955 is yet to be defined? Either Die Deterioration or Strike Doubling?

@Coop!! Where art thou?

1955'S are die deterioration/wear on the last 5 are very common to find. In a roll of 50 cents worth of BU coins I got once, 19 had examples several different dies.

The 1968-1972 cents have a lot of machine damaged cents those years. 1969-S is very common to find different examples when you get a roll of these.
