This is the next set I am going to attempt to complete. I think I have removed the really impossible ones, leaving a few tough ones to keep it interesting. I started with Faustina and ended with Fausta to keep the set manageable and about the same coinage dimensions, but I welcome any thoughts on going earlier. Anyone else doing this sort of set? I am sticking to silver for the early ones, then switching to bronzes for the later ones.

I have the first two... Faustina Major and Minor and their husbands.
I am not really an avid Roman collector though.
Look forwards to seeing your efforts. Good Luck!

Thanks David. I have Faustina Major, Lucilla and Otacilia Severa so far. This just seemed like a fun and manageable set, whereas trying to get every Roman ruler would be a bit epic in scale. I don't have a very large collection of Roman coins outside of the London mint, and even that is small, so I figure this would be a fun way to learn some history and collect some nice coins at the same time.

I did consider it but that's not a manageable set if you earn a pittance...
Anyway, you may consider adding Aelia Flaccilla. I remember coins which feature her were one of the less expensive and the portraits were still half-decent at the time.

If you have Didia Clara and Manila Scantilla in your sights, you might as well just go for all of them! Some of the wives can put all but the rarest of emperors to shame in terms of price. Here is an auction that I was watching a while ago, just for kicks: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LANZ-Rom-AR...TCHING_ENDEDSome of the later empresses are also doable; Aelia Flacilla in particular can be had in very nice condition in the $25-50 range. Eudoxia does also show up from time to time; I think I found two of her in uncleaned lots; albeit horrid condition with very little detail. Still ought to be cheaper than half the women on your list. How much do you have at your disposal? I recall Ben found an insanely rare late empress (Zenonis) and is looking to sell.

Finn, I probably should remove those two and add Aelia Flacilla. I left those two on the list simply because a quick search did show some for sale (albeit for a LOT of money), versus others I omitted because they just don't show up at all.
The design and quality of the coins after Aelia Flacilla plummets, which is why I didn't really want to go beyond Fausta.
UPDATE: I removed the two mentioned above and added Aelia Flacilla to my list. I think this is much more realistic now.

That is an excellent list and very doable for collectors of modest means (like me). Are you open to a proposal to make a community project out of this?
1. As a community project EFLC would lead us in highlighting the various women with a separate thread for each. These could be done in any order you choose.
2. To keep order on the arrangement and make it easy to add material to the existing threads, we could create an index page with the names arranged as you have given them, each followed by a link to the thread for that person. This page would be a separate thread that Ron could put in with the sticky topics at the head of the ancients list.
3. After EFLargeCents has introduced a figure, the rest of us can add examples from our own collections, hopefully without too much duplication of types, unless the portrait of the empress is quite different from anything already posted.
This could be kept as a long term project.
What do you think?

I've set up my own collection simply by "personages" that includes all of the various folks seen on the coins. I set my collection up leaving one space for those I don't have.
It's nice to have all of the similar date issues together, regardless of their "rank".

A do-able set, not my area of focus but I managed to get 10 on the list. Julia Domna and Salonina are probably the most common and easiest to find.

I think that at a minimum you could add Livia, Domitia, and Sabina to your list; they aren't unreasonable compared to Magnia Urbica and Mariniana, both of whom will run $100+ for a "nice" example.
I would have to look it up, but I think one or more of Elagabalus' wives are pretty darn hard to find. Maybe Annia Faustina?

Updated to add Sabina, which is a good place to start. Livia is too far of a jump back, and Domitia is too difficult.
I think the idea Irbguy has is great, wouldn't know how to set that up myself, but happy to contribute when I can. Thanks for all the comments/ideas thus far!

If you were to include provincial coins I think Livia and some of the other Julio-Claudian and Flavian women would be achievable. Actually thinking about it Livia was depicted on the reverse of some of Tiberius's coinage. Here's a picture of a recent bargain pickup of mine. A sestertius minted by Domitian in honor of his niece Julia Titi.

Just make sure, that for each coin that you add to your collection, that the lady has a ' a' at the end of her name ! One thing that you will observe is what hairstyle happens to be in fashion, at the time a particular coin was struck. Also interesting to note what subject material is covered on the reverse designs, in association with the ladies.

Quote: wouldn't know how to set that up myself, but happy to contribute when I can. Actually, in my imagination you would kinda be the ringleader, EFLargeCents. You would start a thread by posting a coin of one of the women on the list, the way you usually do. Once you do that, the thread is set for that particular woman, so we copy and paste a link to the thread in the spot by her name. This illustrates the idea with reference to an old thread on Sabina: Sabina - Wife of Hadrian .......................... http://goccf.com/t/131669&SearchTerms=sabinaFaustina I - Wife of Antoninus Pius Faustina II - Wife of Marcus Aurelius Lucilla - Wife of Lucius Verus Crispina - Wife of Commodus . . etc, etc . Fausta - Wife of Constantinus I Aelia Flaccilla - Wife of Theodosius I In each thread the rest of us will add images and comment on that same person from our collections. EFLC, you can pick any figure you choose in any order to start a thread and we will add its link to the index thread in the sticky section with a whole new entry. Ron will need to help us by deleting the old version of the index when it has been updated with a new entry - which is nothing more than deleting an older post within a thread. The index thread should ONLY contain the index and perhaps one explanatory post. Never more than two posts in the sticky thread. Eventually, we will have a link for each name on the list and can quickly access any one of those threads without any hassle. Only one of us need handle updating the index list, and Ron can regulate that. With the index our conversation can stand for a long time. Since the threads don't disappear, interested viewers can read or add new images and info any time.

Neat idea, although I think that I will only be contributing on one or two of the threads.
